No. 6 Jackson looks to remain unbeaten in dual competition
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 20 Hoosiers continue their trek through the Big Ten dual schedule with a home contest against the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, January 15. Indiana has been hard at work in the room this week preparing to face a Maryland team building momentum from their first Big Ten dual win since joining the conference.

"Maryland is a tough team," said head coach Duane Goldman. "They're very athletic, well coached, and well conditioned. We're going to have to have a great match to come away with a team victory."

No. 20 INDIANA (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) vs. MARYLAND (4-6, 1-3 Big Ten)
Friday, January 15 • 7 p.m. ET • BTN Plus
Bloomington, Ind. • University Gymnasium

Indiana's highest-ranked wrestler, No. 6 Nate Jackson, will put his unbeaten dual record on the line when he locks up against Maryland's Josh Snook in the 174 lbs. bout. Jackson has excelled in Big Ten competition so far this season, securing decision wins over Minnesota's former No. 20 Nick Wanzek and Bo Nickal, the top-ranked grappler in his weight class, of Penn State.

The upset over No. 1 Nickal resulted in a Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor for the Hoosier junior.

"That's a great honor," said Goldman, regarding Jackson's Big Ten Wrestler of the Week selection. "You've got 14 teams in the conference, and some of the best teams in the country. For him to get that shows that he did something pretty special, and he did in taking down the top-ranked wrestler in the country."
Beishuizen: Faith, Preparation Drive Jackson Up the National Rankings

The Terrapins match up fairly evenly with this Hoosier squad, according to Indiana's coaching staff. Like Indiana, Maryland picked up their first Big Ten win in two seasons this year, a 26-10 win over Michigan State. They have a very fluid starting lineup, and they have a bevvy of talent in their underclassmen. The dual will serve as a showcase for many of the future faces of Big Ten wrestling.

"They're a hungry team, we're a young team, and they match up pretty well with us," Jackson said. "But as long as we put in the work in the room, we'll weather the storm."

The Hoosiers are eager to host another dual at University Gymnasium on Friday, where they boast a 3-1 home record. The team enjoys the fan support they've had this season, and the wrestlers are taking notice of the fan support in Bloomington.

"It's been tremendous," Goldman said. "We've had great crowds at SIU-Edwardsville and Eastern Michigan, but the crowd for the Penn State dual was great in spite of the adverse weather. That was probably one of the loudest crowds we've had in a long time. Our athletes had a great time, and they felt that everyone was behind them."

This dual against Maryland will be the final of a four-match home stand. They'll travel to Michigan State (1/22) and No. 6 Michigan (1/24) before returning to Bloomington for a clash against No. 7 Ohio State on Friday, January 29.

Hoosier Notes
IU-MARYLAND SERIES
The Terrapins and Hoosiers will take the mat for their first-ever meeting in dual competition on Friday evening.

BATTLE AGAINST THE BEST
In their last dual, the 20th-ranked Hoosiers hosted #1 Penn State. The dual provided a bevvy of compelling bouts for a raucous home crowd at the University Gymnasium. The highlight of the afternoon came in the 174 lbs. bout between #11 Nate Jackson and #1 Bo Nickal, which Jackson won in a thrilling 7-6 decision win.

Garret Goldman gave an excellent winning effort in the heavyweight bout, picking up his first collegiate pin in 5:35. Top-ranked Penn State took the dual win, 34-8.

TOP OF THE CLASS
Indiana redshirt junior Nate Jackson shot up the national rankings from #11 to #6 (InterMat) in the 174 lbs weight class with his upset over formerly-unbeaten Bo Nickal, the nation's top 174-pounder, in IU's dual against Penn State. Down 2-0 early, Jackson secured a reversal followed by a four-point nearfall to close the first period. Fans stayed on their feet as he showcased his defensive skills, which gave him the narrow 7-6 win. It's Jackson's first win over a #1 grappler, and his fourth career win over a ranked opponent.

Jackson received the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award for his winning effort against Penn State. He joins sophomore Luke Blanton (12/15) as Indiana's Big Ten Weekly honorees in the 2015-16 season.

UNDERCLASSMEN IMPACT
This season's underclassmen are already making noise in the early stages of their IU careers. Indiana's freshmen have achieved 17 podium finishes and four championships in tournament play. True freshman Elijah Oliver (125) is off to a flying start with a 21-5 record and two tournament championships.

The four freshmen currently in IU's dual lineup have won a combined 67% of their bouts with 11 major decisions, six technical falls, and six pins.

LOCKED UP AT LOCK HAVEN
Indiana completed their regular season tournament slate with the LHU Classic (12/29). Six Hoosiers earned podium finishes, which included four tournament champions: Elijah Oliver (125), Jake Danishek (157), Bryce Martin (165) and Nate Jackson (174). Indiana took second place in the team score, finishing just behind #25 Pittsburgh.
