BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team will get the spring season started this weekend by hosting the IU Winter Invitational inside the IU Tennis Center on Jan. 16-18.
The Hoosiers will welcome Abilene Christian, Marquette and Wright State for the tournament. The invite format will include doubles flights and round robin singles play. Play will begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, then on Sunday and Monday at 10:30 a.m.
Head coach Lin Loring is in the midst of his 39th year as the head coach of the Hoosiers and 43rd overall as he looks to build upon his 831 career dual coaching victories, the most ever by any coach in Division I women's tennis history.
This year's squad consists of one senior, two juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen. IU's lone senior, Sarah McLean, will play her only season in an Indiana uniform this spring as she had to sit out a year ago after transferring from Arkansas.
She is joined by juniors Paula Gutierrez and Kim Schmider, sophomores Sarah Baron and Stephanie Smith, and freshmen Madison Appel, Caitlin Bernard, Natalie Whalen and Danielle Wolf.
All but two players on the roster have more than a year of playing experience in the Big Ten after IU lost four mainstays in its starting lineup to graduation a year ago. Gutierrez and Schmider will be looked upon for leadership for the young Hoosiers as McLean will use her SEC experience to help guide the ship.
Play this weekend at the Invite consists of a doubles bracket format and round robin singles. Dual play will begin for the Hoosiers on Jan. 23 when Miami (OH) will visit Bloomington for the first dual of 2016.
