BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Rowing team has announced that they will be hosting Junior Day on March 5 from 12:00 p.m. ET until 4:00 p.m. ET in the Shuel Academic Center inside Memorial Stadium. Current high school juniors and their families are invited to campus to visit and meet the IU Rowing coaches and staff along with other rowing support staff within the athletic department. Tours of athletic facilities and campus will also be available.
This is a tremendous opportunity to learn more about one of the top rowing programs in the Big Ten and the country, as evidenced by their 11th place finishes in the last two NCAA Championships. If you are not an experienced rower but just want more information about the sport and how to potentially join the IU program, in particular the novice rowing program, there will be former rowers that were walk-ons that went on to be highly successful members of team on hand as well.
Head Coach Steve Peterson was named the 2014 National Coach of the Year as he helped guide the Hoosiers to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships, where the team would go on to post an 11th place finish. The entire coaching staff also earned National Coaching Staff of the Year honors that season. Peterson and the Hoosiers followed that up with a second appearnace in the NCAA Championships in 2015, where they once again finished 11th in the country as a team.
Recent student-athlete accolades have included Meradith Dickensheets earning back-to-back First Team All-American honors after joining the team as a walk-on to start her career. She is the first rower in IU history to receive back-to-back first team honors. Current junior Alice Wright, who hails from New Zealand, was named Second Team All-American in 2015 after earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2014.
Those interested in attending are asked to fill out the Online Registration Form to get more details on the activities for the day. Questions can be directed to iurowing@indiana.edu or assistant coach Kim Chavers at (812) 856-1156.
