Hoosiers Come Up Short Against No. 3 Wisconsin
10/1/2016 9:19:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman led the Hoosiers with 11 kills and sophomore Elizabeth Asdell added 10 kills, but the Indiana volleyball team lost in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) against No. 3 Wisconsin on Saturday at University Gym.
IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan felt the Hoosiers got better through the match and took important steps towards positive growth.
"I thought we grew up a lot tonight," she said. "We learned a lot and I'm proud of my team."
The Hoosiers (12-5, 1-3 Big Ten) battled through the first set, which had seven ties, including 7-7 when senior Jazzmine McDonald connected with senior Megan Tallman for one of Tallman's 32 assists.
From the 7-7 tie, Wisconsin (12-1, 4-0 Big Ten) scored three in a row to open up a 10-7 lead. The Hoosiers got back to 10-8, but Wisconsin pushed it to 14-9. Indiana continued to battle and got within three at 22-19 on a block from freshman Deyshia Lofton and Asdell, but the Badgers scored the final three points to take the set, 25-19.
The Hoosiers gained confidence from the first set and got out to a 6-4 lead with a solo block from Beerman in set two.
Asdell and Beerman combined for nine of the Hoosiers 12 kills in the second set, which featured 10 ties and three lead changes. With the set tied 13-13, Wisconsin scored on two Indiana errors to build a 15-13 lead.
The Hoosiers kept within two at 18-16 on a Wisconsin attack error, but the Badgers extended the lead to 20-16 and went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-21 second set win.
Indiana came out of the locker room after the set break with confidence but allowed Wisconsin to jump out to an 8-1 lead. The Hoosiers were not able to recover from the slow start and fell 25-15 in set three to drop the match in three sets.
Up next the Hoosiers have a pair of matches on the road with No. 1 Nebraska on Friday Oct. 7 and a trip to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on Saturday Oct. 8. The Hoosiers are next at home on Friday Oct. 14 against Rutgers.
