Hoosiers Take Down Rutgers, 3-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After dropping the opening set, the Indiana volleyball team came back to take the next three and secure a 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-22) win over Rutgers on Friday at University Gym.
Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers (13-7, 2-5) with 19 kills and added eight digs. Fellow senior Taylor Lebo tallied 18 digs to go along with three aces. Freshman setter Victoria Brisack provided Indiana with 43 assists, seven digs and five kills in the match.
Following a defeat in the first set, the Hoosiers can out strong in set two. As a team the Hoosiers posted 15 kills and only one error for a .636 hitting percentage and held Rutgers (4-16, 0-7) to a .115 percentage. Hammond tallied seven kills on 10 attempts in the set.
The Hoosiers never trailed in the third set and served three of their 11 aces in the match in the third set. With the set tied 14-14 Indiana scored five straight points to blow it open and cruise to a 25-18 victory to go up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set proved to be closer with 10 ties and five lead changes as the Hoosiers tried to put away the match.
With the fourth set tied 17-17, redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman found the deep corner for a kill and freshman Deyshia Lofton served up an ace, to put Indiana up 19-17.
The Hoosiers would extend the lead to 22-18, but Rutgers would not go down without a fight. The Scarlet Knights stormed back to get within one at 22-21.
Following an Indiana timeout, Rutgers hit a ball out of bounds, but then got a block to again be within one at 23-22.
Hammond and Lebo put the match away for the Hoosiers with a kill from Hammond and an ace by Lebo to end the match and give the Hoosiers the four set victory.
Up next the Hoosiers welcome No. 10 Penn State on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
