WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Behind two goals from redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown, Indiana Women's Soccer drew with Purdue on Saturday night in the Golden Boot Game, 2-2.
The Hoosiers were outshot by the Boilermakers, 31-17, but freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu made eight saves to earn the draw.
"This game and this rivalry is always a battle," said head coach Amy Berbary. "They came out ready to play and I thought we did too. Mykayla had a great game and really fought for her two goals tonight. In goal, L'Hommedieu came up big again and again to keep us in this game."
Indiana (7-7-4, 4-3-3 Big Ten) earned one point in the close battle for the Big Ten Tournament. With 15 points, the Hoosiers are now tied with Ohio State for eighth place. However, Indiana owns the tiebreak after defeating the Buckeyes on Oct. 13, 3-2. With a victory against Michigan on Wednesday night, Indiana will lock up its spot in the Big Ten Tournament. If Ohio State loses to Penn State on Wednesday, that will also guarantee the Hoosiers a spot in the tournament.
Brown first struck in the 22nd minute on a hard-fought battle with a Purdue defender. After Chandra Davidson sent the ball to Brown 25 yards from the goal, Brown took on the defender, sliding to gain control at the top of the 18-yard box and following the ball to shoot it in from 12 yards out.
L'Hommedieu's biggest save of the first half came in the 30th minute as Gianna Milaro sent one in, but L'Hommedieu was able to get her hands out and parry the ball over the crossbar.
The Boilermakers (4-11-1, 2-7-1 Big Ten) equalized the game right out of halftime as Andrea Petrina scored from the right flank in the 46th minute, sailing a diagonal look to the top left of the goal, just underneath the bar.
Purdue registered 14 of their 31 shots in the second half of action, but L'Hommedieu continued to make stops. After a shot by Andrea Petrina hit the left post in the 58th minute, Vanessa Korolas was there to scoop up the rebound. However, L'Hommedieu made the stop to keep the game at 1-1. Two minutes later, she stopped Korolas again on a huge save, pushing the ball out of harm's way.
However, Purdue would break through in the 78th minute to take a 2-1 lead after Maddy Duncan scored on a Boilermaker corner, one of 18 Purdue earned in the game.
Brown didn't waste any time responding, netting her second goal just four minutes later. After sophomore Abby Allen sent the ball to senior Veronica Ellis on the Indiana side of the field, Ellis then pushed the ball down the right flank where Brown caught up with it 20 yards out. After dribbling it in to the box on a 1 v. 1 with Purdue keeper Jordan Ginther, she finished by sending it in to the center of the net.
The Boilermakers outshot the Hoosiers in the two overtime periods, 9-4, with all of Indiana's looks coming in the first period.
In the 92nd minute, Davidson headed a ball in, but Ginther was there for the save. A minute later, Brown looked for another score but a shot from near the top of the box was blocked.
After not being tested in the first overtime, L'Hommedieu made a pair of saves in the second period to keep the game tied.
Dating back to the Oct. 6 draw with Penn State, the Hoosiers have now earned at least one point in five consecutive games, the most since the 2007 team did so six times.
Indiana closes out the regular season on Wednesday as the Hoosiers host Michigan for Senior Night. Before kickoff at 6 p.m., IU will honor redshirt senior Marissa Borschke and seniors Ellis and Ari Kowalski with a pre-game ceremony.
