EVANSTON, Ill. – Senior Taylor Lebo tallied 17 digs and moved into the top-10 in program history in career digs as the Indiana volleyball team won in three sets over Northwestern (25-23, 27-25, 25-19) on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Freshman setter Victoria Brisack posted her second consecutive double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs. Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers (14-9, 3-7) with 14 kills and sophomore Elizabeth Asdell hit .467 with eight kills and three blocks.
"I think anytime you can win on the road, especially the first two sets, being 25-23, 27-25, on the road is tough to do against any Big Ten team," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "This is a team that just upset Purdue. We are proud to get out of here going 3-0."
The Hoosiers and Wildcats traded points in the first set, which had eight ties total, but Northwestern got out to a four-point lead at 16-12. Indiana steadily cut into the lead and with back-to-back kills from freshman Deyshia Lofton and junior Jessica Leish, they tied the set 21-21. With the set tied 23-23, Lofton connected on another kill and a Northwestern attack error gave the Hoosiers set one, 25-23.
In the second set the Hoosiers tallied 18 kills, but with nine attack errors could not pull away from the Wildcats. The biggest lead by either team in the set was three points, with Northwestern up 13-10. The Hoosiers scored three straight points to tie at 13-13 and a kill from Hammond put the Hoosiers up 18-17 and forced Northwestern to call a timeout.
The Hoosiers had set point at 24-22, but Northwestern got a kill and an ace to tie it 24-24. With the second set tied 25-25, redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman scored and Asdell put the set away for Indiana with a kill to end it, 27-25.
With a 2-0 lead in the match, the Hoosiers kept the momentum and limited their attack errors to four in the third set.
Indiana held Northwestern to nine kills and a .088 hitting percentage in the final set and jumped out to a 16-9 lead, which included a 9-1 scoring run.
The Wildcats closed to within three at 22-19, but the Hoosiers scored the final three points of the set and an ace by freshman Samantha Fogg gave the Hoosiers the set and match victory.
With her 17 digs in the match, Lebo now has 1,031 for her career, which ranks 10th in program history.
"I think Taylor is playing differently right now," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "She is acting different and talking different. Everything about her is winning and a winning mentality. She has taken it upon herself, her demeanor never changes and she just plays."
Up next Indiana is back at home to host Michigan State on Friday Oct. 28 and Michigan on Saturday Oct. 29. Both matches will be played at University Gym.
