BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 8 seeded Indiana Women's Soccer (7-8-4, 4-4-3 Big Ten) team travels to Minnesota to take on the No. 1 seeded Golden Gophers in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. ET. on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn. and will mark the first time since 2013 that the Hoosiers have earned a bid to the eight-team tournament.
Indiana clinched its spot in the tournament after Ohio State dropped a 2-0 decision to Penn State on Wednesday. The loss meant the Hoosiers and Buckeyes were tied with 15 points, but IU earned the tiebreaker with a 3-2 win at Ohio State on Oct. 13.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers closed out play at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday with a Senior Night showdown against Michigan. IU twice led the Wolverines, including a 2-1 advantage after a header from sophomore Maya Piper in the 78th minute. However, Michigan netted a pair of goals in the final six minutes to come away with a 3-2 victory.
INDIANA IN THE B1G TOURNAMENT
IU is 5-11-1 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament. Last time the Hoosiers qualified was in 2013 when they defeated Illinois, 5-3, before falling to Nebraska in the semi-finals, 3-1. Prior to 2013, IU had last made it to the Big Ten Tournament in 2007.
Indiana has twice faced Minnesota in the conference tournament. In 1998, the teams drew, 2-2, but IU advanced on penalty kicks. In 1995, the Golden Gophers advanced with a 3-2 win.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
No. 11-ranked Minnesota earned a share of the Big Ten regular season title on Wednesday night with a 6-0 victory against Maryland, marking the fourth title in the program's history. Minnesota, Penn State and Northwestern all ended the year with 24 conference points, but the Golden Gophers earned the No. 1 seed on tie-breaks.
Senior Simone Kolander, who was named the Big Ten Forward of the Year on Friday, leads the way with 11 goals and six assists. Josee Steiver, who earned First Team All-Big Ten honors along with Kolander and Rashida Beal, has netted seven goals and registered seven assists. In goal, Tarah Hobbs has a 0.54 goals against average with 47 saves and nine shutouts.
IU and Minnesota previously met this season on Sept. 23. The game was scoreless until the 43rd minute when the No. 9 Golden Gophers netted their first of three scores in a 3-0 victory. IU trails in the all-time series, 9-16-2.
THREE EARN BIG TEN HONORS
On Friday, redshirt senior Marissa Borschke was named Third Team All-Big Ten, while Macy Miller earned All-Freshman honors. The recognitions, which are voted on by the Big Ten coaches, are the first for Indiana since 2013. Borschke has played every minute of the 2016 season in the back. In addition, she has netted a pair of goals – on a penalty kick in Indiana's 2-2 draw with No. 24 Rutgers and on the game-winner at Maryland on Oct. 16. Miller has played in all 19 games for the Hoosiers and has put up 18 shots, with eight being on target, which is the most for IU's freshmen and third most on the team. An impressive run by Miller down the right flank against Wisconsin on Sept. 25 earned the Hoosiers the corner kick that set up Cassidy Blacha's game-winning goal. Two games later, she was fouled on a breakaway against Rutgers, resulting in Borschke's penalty kick.
In addition, junior Kylie Kirk was named the IU Sportsmanship Award honoree for her ethical behavior both on and off the field.
