Hoosiers Host Top-15 Pair in Weekend Home Stand
10/6/2016 6:13:00 PM | Field Hockey
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the first time this season, the Indiana Hoosiers will enjoy the comforts of home with two games in Bloomington. The comfort will be short-lived, however, as the Hoosiers host a pair of top-15 teams from the Big Ten and the ACC.
"We're very excited about having two home games because we play great at home, we definitely have a home turf advantage," said Indiana head coach Amanda Janney. "Preparing for top-15 teams is exciting, because we know we have to bring our best. We're very focused on what Indiana Field Hockey is doing, what our strategy is for the weekend, and executing to our best ability. That's how we're going to beat these teams, by not getting too overwhelmed with who we're playing, but doing all the great things we did last weekend and putting them together to find those wins."
With the Hoosiers running downhill towards the Big Ten tournament, each matchup against the Big Ten will be crucial to qualifying and reaching an optimal seed for the culminating November weekend in College Park. The game against Boston College, their third of four versus the ACC this season, provides a test that will serve the Hoosiers well for their postseason aspirations. Both home games will stream live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go.com.

Hoosier Notes:
Heartbreak Weekend
The Hoosiers are back in action after suffering a pair of losses, both in overtime, last weekend. They opened at home versus No. 18 Iowa, and forced overtime with Kelsey Giese's equalizer in the 61st minute before the Hawkeyes sealed their 2-1 win in the opening minutes of overtime.
Closing the weekend at Miami, the Hoosiers held a 2-0 lead with goals from Ciara Girouard and Maddie Latino before the Redhawks came back to take a 3-2 lead. Taylor Swope put the game in extra time with her tying goal, the first of her career, in the 65th minute. Noëlle Rother posted a season-high 12 saves in the 4-3 overtime loss.
Top of the Charts
Indiana senior Kate Barber led the nation in scoring through the first five weeks of the year, and she continues her presence in the national top five this week. Through IU's 12 games, Barber ranks third nationally, first in the Big Ten, in goals per game (1.25); and fifth nationally, second in the Big Ten, in points per game (2.83). Furthermore, Barber leads the Big Ten in total goals (15) and ranks second in total points (34).
Two additional Hoosiers, Mollie Getzfread and Maddie Latino, rank in the top 10 of the Big Ten assists averages. Latino ranks fourth with eight assists (16th - NCAA), while Getzfread is sixth with seven (33rd - NCAA).
Casing the 'Cats
Indiana begins their weekend home stand against No. 6 Northwestern, a team that breached the national top 10 after beating No. 4 Penn State and No. 6 Maryland in one weekend. The Wildcats are 10-2 with an unblemished Big Ten record, and they're top three in the Big Ten in nearly every statistical category.
Indiana won last year's meeting in dramatic fashion, 3-2, in Bloomington. With the game tied at half after Isabel Flens' 28th-minute equalizer, Maddie Latino buried the game-winner in the early part of the second half. Northwestern holds a narrow 10-9 lead in the all-time series.
Eager for the Eagles
The Hoosiers close the home weekend with their third of four ACC opponents this season, this time against No. 14 Boston College. Sunday's game will be the second-ever meeting between the two teams, with Boston College winning 1-0 in 2010. The Eagles are 4-6 this season, and have dropped their previous two meetings against the Big Ten: 2-1 versus Northwestern, and 3-1 versus Maryland.
Worth Noting...
• Goalkeeper Noëlle Rother ranks first in the Big Ten in saves per game (4.9) and fifth in save percentage (.678).
• Kate Barber is two goals away from matching Indiana's single-season goal record (17), set by Lydia Schrott in 2005. Prior to this season, Barber tallied 10 goals over three seasons.
• Sunday's game against Boston College will feature the return of two former IU coaches to Bloomington. Eagles head coach Kelly Doton served as IU's associate head coach (2008-11), and assistant coach Phil Edwards was an assistant with IU for three seasons (2012-14).
• Indiana's senior class of Kate Barber, Morgan Dye, Malia Fujisawa, and Mollie Getzfread have combined for 18 goals, 14 assists, and 50 points.
• Friday's game between Indiana and Northwestern is IU's #Play4TheCureDay, where the Hoosiers will add pink to their Cream & Crimson scheme.
• Indiana will host their Alumni Day game, honoring past members of the #HoosiersFH family, on Sunday versus Boston College.
