HONOLULU – The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers (1-0) opened their 2016-17 season with a 103-99 overtime win against the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks (0-1) in one of the nation's premier season-opening showcases, the State Farm Armed Forces Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. James Blackmon Jr. led Indiana to their 19th consecutive win in a season opener with 26 points and four 3-pointers.
The game turned into a shootout between Blackmon and Kansas sophomore Frank Mason III in the last three minutes of the second half, as both combined for the final 17 points of regulation. Mason hit a free throw and converted an and-one before Blackmon splashed a 3-pointer on the other end. Blackmon earned another three points on free throws, part of his six-for-seven effort at the stripe, and Mason countered with another and-one opportunity. Both players made sets of two free throws to knot the contest, 89-89, before overtime.
It was then that a hero emerged from Indiana's bench, freshman Curtis Jones, who lifted Indiana to victory by scoring seven of Indiana's 14 points in the overtime period. Jones drained a 3-pointer before converting two free throws and sealing the win with an emphatic dunk. Jones finished with 15 points and a trio of 3-pointers in his career debut.
Thomas Bryant delivered an inspiring performance with his third career double-double, scoring 19 points with 10 rebounds and a pair of steals. The big man kept the Hoosiers close in the first half with 16 points, including two transition dunks in the final minute of the period.
OG Anunoby returned from the offseason with 13 points and another noteworthy showing on defense. He grabbed seven rebounds, forced one steal, and made three blocks to lead both teams in that category.
Indiana out-rebounded the Jayhawks, 50-39, and gathered 18 offensive rebounds. Juwan Morgan's 10 rebounds doubles his previous career high, and he and Bryant combined for 10 offensive boards.
The Indiana defense, led by quick hands from players like Robert Johnson, made their presence known. On one play, Landen Lucas appeared to get an open shot from close range, until Johnson raked the ball loose on his way to the tin and forced a Jayhawk turnover.
The Hoosiers also did well to limit Kansas freshman Josh Jackson's impact on the proceedings. Jackson went 2-for-8 with five points before earning his fourth foul, forcing him away from the court at a crucial juncture in the second half. He ended the game with nine points on 3-for-11 from the field.
Ultimately, Indiana's sharpshooters provided a massive contribution to the win over third-ranked Kansas. The Hoosiers and Jayhawks sunk an equal amount of field goals, 31 apiece, but Indiana made 15 of their 31 3-point attempts to Kansas' seven-of-23. The Jayhawks won the free throw battle, but Indiana made 16-of-18 free throw attempts to close the game.
Kansas is the highest-ranked team Indiana has beaten in their first game of the season since beating No. 2 UCLA by 20 points in St. Louis in 1975. Head coach Tom Crean is now 17-1 all-time in season opening games. Tonight he coached the Hoosiers to their 24th regular season ranked win since the 2011-2012 season, the highest mark in the Big Ten.
Indiana will return to Bloomington in preparation for their home opener, and their first regular season game in the newly renovated Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, on Wednesday, November 16. The Hoosiers will host the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks (0-1) in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. ET tipoff and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
