Hoosiers Fall in Five to Boilermakers
11/16/2016 10:51:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After falling behind 2-1 the Indiana volleyball team battled back to force a fifth set, but could not come out on top as Purdue won in five sets (25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 25-18, 7-15) on Wednesday at University Gym.
Senior Allison Hammond and freshman Kendall Beerman led the Hoosiers with 11 kills each. Senior Taylor Lebo played fearless defense and ended the match with 21 digs.
Lebo added an ace and moved into a tie for fifth on the Hoosiers all-time list for career aces with 130. The 21 digs moved Lebo into seventh on the Hoosiers all-time list for career digs with 1,127.
Sophomore Elizabeth Asdell added seven kills and hit .429 in the match and freshman Deyshia Lofton tallied eight kills and hit .350.
Although disappointed in the outcome of the match, IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan liked the fight of her team.
"I'm really proud of them," she said. "We took that match about as far as you can go. We served aggressively and put pressure on them all night. In the end we didn't come out on top and we have to go back to work with three matches left in the regular season."
The Hoosiers (16-14, 5-12 Big Ten) hit .333 in the opening set with 15 kills and four errors. Sophomore Jessica Admire connected on four kills on four attempts in the set, but the Hoosiers found themselves down 17-13. The Hoosiers rallied and scored four straight points for one of the 11 ties of the set at 17-17.
Tied 19-19, the Hoosiers scored six of the final eight points of the set and freshman Meaghan Koors served up an ace on match point to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 in the match.
Purdue (17-11, 7-10 Big Ten) hit .452 and .560 respectively in the second and third sets and won each 25-15 to build a 2-1 lead in the match.
Indiana came out focused in the fourth set and hit their best hitting percentage of the night at .480 with 14 kills and two errors.
Junior Jessica Leish was called upon for her first action of the match in the fourth set and delivered for the Hoosiers with five kills on eight swings (.500) in the set.
Indiana led the entire fourth set and held Purdue to a .174 hitting percentage with 11 kills and seven errors.
Leish gave the Hoosiers match point at 24-17 in the fourth set and after a Purdue kill the Boilermakers hit one into the net and the Hoosiers evened the match 2-2 with a 25-18 set four victory.
Despite having momentum from the fourth set victory, it was Purdue who jumped out to an 8-4 lead as the Hoosiers called a timeout. The Boilermakers hit .400 in the final set and came away with a 15-7 set victory to win the match.
Up next the Hoosiers hit the road as they take on Rutgers on Sunday Nov. 20 in Piscataway, N.J.
