DENTON, Texas – Indiana Women's Basketball posted one of the best shooting performances in school history on Tuesday afternoon as it rolled to a 94-64 win at North Texas.
Indiana (5-3) shot the fourth-best single game field goal percentage in the victory, going 64 percent from the floor. It marks the best single game clip since Indiana shot 67.4 percent against Michigan State in 1998 and fourth behind a 64.6 percent performance against Kentucky in 1983. IU shot above 50 percent in every quarter of the win – which snapped a two-game skid – including a season-high 73 percent in the second.
Junior guard Tyra Buss led with a game-high 21 points on 6-for-10 shooting and a 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line as she was one of four to score in double figures for the Hoosiers. Buss also picked up four steals and tied a team-high five assists. Junior forward Amanda Cahill posted her 19th career double-double with 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
Senior guard Alexis Gassion also added 15 points, four rebounds and tying a game-high five assists while sophomore Kym Royster came off the bench for a season-high 13 points. In all, 10 players scored and grabbed rebounds in the win while dishing out 15 assists led by five each from Buss and Gassion.
The Hoosiers equally as dominant on the glass, outrebounding UNT 44-14 led by Cahill's 10 boards and five from Royster and freshman forward Bre Wickware. Wickware – a Denton, Texas native – scored five points and grabbed five boards in the victory.
Indiana took control early, opening the game on 13-0 run while holding the Mean Green scoreless for the first 5:14 of the contest. IU would lead by as many as 14 in the quarter, after Gassion fed Anderson on the low block with 2:29 to play. But UNT would close the quarter on a 9-2 run and cut the Hoosier lead down to five, 20-15, after one quarter.
Gassion responded for IU to open the second quarter as she scored six straight points to elevate the lead back to 11 with just under three minutes played in the frame. It marked part of a 12-3 run early in the second quarter that was capped by freshman guard Ria Gulley's three pointer, giving her team a 38-18 lead with 3:24 to play. It was all Indiana to close out the opening 20 minutes, going on another run (11-2) to hold its largest lead at the half this season, 49-22.
The third quarter opened with threes from Buss and McBride as Indiana stretched its lead out to more than 30. It turned out to be the slowest quarter for IU, who were outscored 25-21 thanks in part to a 12-0 run by the Mean Green over a two-and-a-half-minute stretch. Going without a field goal for the final 4:34, Indiana got momentum to end the third as Gassion's layup with time expiring put them up 70-47.
Closing out the win, Indiana shot 61.5 percent in the fourth quarter as it tallied up 94 points in the win – tying their single game high this season as they also hit the mark in a win over Vanderbilt on Nov. 13.
