PALM COAST, Florida – Using a couple strong finishes down the stretch, the Indiana Hoosiers handed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights a 4-2 loss in the final round robin match of the 2016 Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The win improved Indiana's record to 2-1 in the round robin, tied with Michigan State for first place in the East Division. But Michigan State won the tiebreaker and advanced to the championship match while the Hoosiers moved to the Third Place match against Purdue.
Max Kollin showed his senior leadership against Rutgers, going 2-up through the first three holes of his match and never lost that lead on the way to a 5&4 victory.
Sophomore Brendon Doyle followed Kollin's lead and jumped out a 2-up lead through his first five holes. After Rutgers trimmed the lead down to 1-up, Doyle won the 10th hole of the match to go 2-up again and then surged ahead for good on holes 13, 14 and 15, winning all three holes to close out the match, 5&3.
In Andrew Havill's match against Chase Wheatley, Havill held a lead through the early part of the match and never trailed as the match went to the 14th hole all square. From there, Havill recorded par on the final five holes and that was good enough to come away with the 2-up win.
Keegan Vea started his match against Toks Pedro on the par 5 18th hole and his par was good enough to take the 1-up lead. He followed with two more pars and was looking at a 3-up lead after three holes. His lead would grow to 4-up after a birdie on the par 4 7th hole, but Pedro would rally back and actually took a 1-up lead heading into the last hole. On the final hole, the par 3 17th, Vea put his tee shot on the green and recorded the 2-putt par while Rutgers carded bogey 4 and the match finished all square.
While Vea was coming through on the last hole, Jake Brown was busy mounting an impressive finish of his own. He started the match by winning the first hole, but then lost the next two and was 1-down through three holes. That deficit quickly went away on the par 4 5th hole, the sixth hole of the match, when Brown posted an eagle to square the match. Brown and Rutgers' Jonathan Chang matched scores for each of the next eight holes before Chang broke through with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes of the match to put Brown in a 2-down hole with just two holes remaining. It was then Brown's turn to register back-to-back birdies and halve the match and finish his round at 1-under par.
The only match that Indiana lost to the Scarlet Knights was Jack Sparrow's, as he was never able to get on track and lost 6&5.
