Hoosiers Drop Close Match vs. #14 Purdue

PALM COAST, Florida – In the third place match of the 2016 Big Ten Match Play Championship, Indiana lost to No. 14 Purdue by a score of 5-1, but the score did not tell how close the match was, as three of the six matches finished with a 1-up margin of victory.
Indiana sophomore Brendon Doyle was able to pick up the lone win of the day for the Hoosiers, and it was of the 1-up variety. He started his match with a par to take a 1-up lead and held that lead until a birdie by Purdue's Brian Carlson squared the match on the fourth hole of the match. Carlson would go on to reel off three more birdies in the next five holes but only held a 1-up lead over Doyle at that point. Doyle fell into a 2-down hole through 10 holes but squared the match after a birdie and par on the 13th and 14th holes of the match. A birdie on hole 18 – the 16th of the match – put Doyle back in front but Carlson won the next hole so they went to the last hole of the match all square. On that final hole, Doyle was able to post par while Carlson registered a bogey to allow Doyle to earn the win.
Redshirt freshman Jack Sparrow did not play up to his ability in the morning round, but came out and played a steady round against Fernando Barco in the afternoon. After Barco took an early lead, Sparrow birdied the fourth hole of the match to even things up. Barco went back ahead by a 2-up margin with three holes remaining before Sparrow won the 17th hole of the match. But both players recorded par on the final hole and Sparrow suffered the 1-down loss.
For senior Max Kollin, his match against Timmy Hildebrand was a back and forth roller coaster. Kollin was holding a slim 1-up lead in the early part before Hildebrand went 1-up in the middle of the match. Kollin rebounded to go 1-up after back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes of the match and he held that 1-up lead with two holes left. However, he was not able to close out the match and Hildebrand won the last two to steal the 1-up win over Kollin.
Jake Brown lost his match to Purdue's Austin Eoff, 6&5, Andrew Havill dropped a 4&3 decision to Jarle Volden and Keegan Vea suffered a 4&2 defeat to Stuart Macdonald in the other three matches.
Next up on the schedule will be the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona, which runs from Feb. 28 through March 1 at Palm Valley GC.
