GOODYEAR, Arizona – The Indiana men's golf team opened the 2016 Loyola Intercollegiate on Sunday with a team score of 271, which is the best team score since the 2009-10 season.
The last time Indiana posted a team score of 271 was Nov. 1, 2009 at the Renaissance Invitational in Naples, Florida.
The top individual performers for Indiana on Sunday were redshirt freshman Jake Brown and sophomore Brendon Doyle, who both carded 6-under par 66 and are tied for second place individually.
For Brown, it matches his low round of the year, as he also a 66 in his final round at the Windon Memorial on Sept. 28, 2015. It's a new career best round of Doyle, whose previous best was 70.
Brown began his round with three straight birdies and would go on to register six birdies and zero bogeys on the front nine for a 6-under par 30. On the back nine, he registered one birdie, one bogey and seven pars en route to the 66.
With Brown getting off to a strong start to his round, Doyle surged at the end of his round. Although he did open with back-to-back birdies on the front side, he played the rest of the front nine at even par. On the back nine, he posted an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole and then closed with three consecutive birdies for a 32 on the back nine.
Andrew Havill also birdied the first hold and was 2-under par as he made the turn to the back. Then he birdies holes 11 and 12 to get to 4-under par on his round before a bogey on 15 meant he would finish with a 3-under round of 69.
For Max Kollin, he used a hot start with two birdies in his first two holes and then carded birdies on holes 7 and 8 to go ou tin 4-under par 32. On the back nine, his lone blemish was a double bogey on the par 5 11th hole before posting seven straight pars for a score of 70.
Keegan Vea started his round with a birdie on hole 2 before a bogey on hole 7 put him back to even par. But birdies on 11 and 13 on the back put him back in red numbers, only to see a bogey on 17 see him finish at 1-under par 71.
Playing as an individual for Indiana is redshirt freshman Jack Sparrow, who logged 15 pars, two double bogeys and two birdies on his way to a 2-over par 74.
