MIAMI – Behind a complete game from freshman pitcher Josie Wood and a three-hit and two-RBI effort from sophomore Rebecca Blitz, the Indiana Softball team defeated Delaware on Friday in the Panther Invitational, 5-2.
The Hoosiers saw eight different players collect at least one hit to combine for a season-high 10 base knocks.
Wood (2-1) allowed just one earned run on six hits in the effort and tossed five shutout innings until the Blue Hens got on the board in the sixth frame. The complete game was the first in her career.
The Hoosier bats looked to get an early jump on the Blue Hens as they loaded the bases in the second, however a groundout ended the threat.
However, IU didn't have to wait long as sophomore Rachel O'Malley gave Indiana a 2-0 fourth-inning lead on a single to score Alyssa Rosati and Michelle Huber.
Back-to-back doubles by junior Erin Lehman and senior Shannon Cawley tacked a run onto the Indiana lead in the next inning.
The Blue Hens got on the board in the sixth as Mariah Kondravy led off the frame with a homer to center. Delaware looked to push closer as the Blue Hens had two runners in scoring position with no outs. Wood responded with a strikeout, fielder's choice and groundout to end the inning with a 3-1 lead.
After sophomore Taylor Uden doubled and O'Malley earned a walk, sophomore Aimilia McDonough, an Ole Miss transfer, picked up her first hit in an Indiana uniform to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Blitz then singled towards first to bring in sophomore Kennedy Cribbs, who was running for Uden, and O'Malley.
Delaware picked up a run in the final frame as a pair of Hoosier errors brought in Leanna Gearhart.
Indiana returns to action this evening to face tournament host FIU at 7 p.m. The Hoosiers and Blue Hens will square off one more time this weekend as they will play Saturday at 11 a.m.
