MIAMI – Indiana Softball dropped a 5-2 decision to FIU on Friday night at the Panther Invitational. The Hoosiers took a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning, but a three-run frame for FIU was too much to overcome.
Indiana struck early as sophomore Rebecca Blitz earned a walk to lead off the game, followed by a one-out single by senior Shannon Cawley. After senior Kelsey Dotson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Blitz scored on a wild pitch by Corinne Jenkins.
The Panthers knotted the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after a solo homer from Aleim Lopez to left field.
The stalemate lasted just five batters as Cawley doubled to left field and beat the tag at home off a single from Dotson to make it 2-1.
Back-to-back one-out singles from sophomores Rachel O'Malley and Taylor Uden threatened to extend the Indiana lead, but a double play to shortstop ended the Hoosier inning.
FIU took the lead for good in the fifth as they plated three runs on three hits, a wild pitch and a Hoosier error. After Ashley Leon scored the first run on a wild pitch from Tara Trainer, Gabby Spallone brought in a pair of runs on an RBI double to make it 4-2 in favor of the Panthers.
The final FIU run of the game came on a RBI single by Jackie Schoff in the sixth.
Trainer (1-3) took the loss after tossing 4.1 innings and giving up four runs on five hits.
Indiana returns to action tomorrow as the Hoosiers face Delaware and Holy Cross in the final day of their appearance in the Panther Invitational.
