MIAMI, Fla. – Behind impressive outings from the Indiana pitching staff and a trio of home runs from the bats, Indiana Softball swept the final day of the Panther Invitational, shutting out Delaware, 5-0, and defeating Holy Cross in 12 innings, 4-1.
In game one, Indiana knocked two homers while blanking the Blue Hens on the other side of the ball. Freshman Tara Trainer (2-3) picked up the win as she tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits.
The game was largely a duel in the circle to start as the two teams combined for just two hits though the first three innings of play.
However, the Indiana bats came alive in the fourth inning as sophomore Taylor Uden hit a three-run homer to left-centerfield to make it 3-0. The home run, which was Uden's first of the season, brought in seniors Alyssa Rosati and Michelle Huber.
One inning later, senior Shannon Cawley picked up her first home run of the year on a one-out solo shot to centerfield. The game marked the first mutli-home run effort of the season for the Hoosiers.
Indiana tacked on another run later in the fifth frame as senior Kelsey Dotson and sophomore Aimilia McDonough hit back-to-back doubles to make it 5-0.
Sophomore Emily Kirk came in and tossed one inning of relief, sitting the Blue Hens down in order.
The second game of the day was a marathon as freshman Josie Wood (3-1) threw all 12.0 innings of play, facing 44 batters and giving up just one run on 10 strikeouts and no walks. The 10 strikeouts matches the season high set by Trainer against Georgia State on Feb. 13.
The 12 innings pitched by Wood ties the fifth-most for a single pitcher at Indiana and the most since Monica Wright tossed 12 on May 14, 2010.
Neither team plated a run in the regulated seven innings of play as the game went to extras with a scoreless stalemate.
The Crusaders struck first after Jaclyn Brewster scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 in the eighth.
Indiana responded to extend the game as Cawley knocked a one-out single to left, followed by Dotson reaching on a hit-by-pitch. A walk to McDonough loaded the bases to set the stage for Uden, who singled to center to score Rosati.
Beginning in the ninth, Wood retired 11 batters in a row, including registering three straight 1-2-3 innings to keep the game tied up at 1-1.
The Hoosier offense came out swinging in the bottom of the 12th as junior Erin Lehman led off the frame with a double to left. Next batter up, Lehman advanced on a wild pitch as the Crusaders attempted to walk Cawley intentionally. Dotson then stepped up and ended the game on her three-run shot over the left field wall.
Indiana returns to action next weekend as the Hoosiers travel to College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational.
