Wood’s One-Hitter Leads Hoosiers Past UTEP, 3-0

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Behind her first career one-hitter, freshman Josie Wood led the Indiana Softball team in a 3-0 shutout victory of UTEP on Friday afternoon.

The victory was Wood's third complete game of the season and improved her record to 4-1 on the year. The Miners did not see a runner safely reach until the fifth-inning Hoosier error led off the frame. The lone UTEP hit of the game came three batters later on a two-out single to left by Linda Garcia.

Sophomore Aimilia McDonough had a standout game for the Hoosiers at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. The run was the Ole Miss transfer's first in an IU uniform.

Indiana struck early as back-to-back singles by sophomore Rebecca Blitz and McDonough led off the game. Senior Kelsey Dotson extended her hitting streak to eight games on a single to right to load the bases. Junior CaraMia Tsirigos was then hit by a pitch to bring in McDonough. Senior Shannon Cawley registered the second run of the inning as she crossed home on a groundout by junior Erin Lehman.

McDonough picked up her second hit of the game on her first career triple to score Blitz, who also had reached on her second hit of the day.

Outside of the fifth inning, UTEP did not put another runner on base as Wood finished the win with seven strikeouts and, for the second game in a row, zero walks.

Indiana returns to action this afternoon to face No. 16 Texas A&M.
