Khalafalla’s School Record Highlights Thursday Prelims for Hoosiers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team registered it's fourth school record in two days on Thursday morning at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
In total, the Hoosiers qualified 14 swimmers for Friday night's finals – seven in Championship Finals, four in B Finals and three in C Finals.
500 Freestyle
In the 500 freestyle, the Hoosiers are bringing back five swimmers for Thursday night's finals. Max Irwin led the way, qualifying sixth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 4:20.16. Joining Irwin in the Championship Final will be Adam Destrampe, who qualified eighth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 4:21.70. Destrampe's mark ranks him as the 18th-fastest 500 freestyler in school history.
Jackson Miller (4:24.41) and Ethan Curl (4:24.51) both made the B Final with NCAA B cut marks, while Trey Hubbuch made the C Final with a time of 4:26.67.
200 IM
In the 200 IM, the Hoosiers brought back five swimmers for the evening finals, including three in the Championship Final.
Ian Finnerty qualified fourth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:44.14. By cutting over four seconds off his previous best, Finnerty now ranks and the fourth-fastest 200 IM swimmer in school history. Blake Pieroni qualified fifth overall with a PR and NCAA B cut time of 1:44.44 – ranking him as the seventh fastest 200 IM swimmer at IU.
Vini Lanza had a tremendous swim for the Hoosiers, qualifying for the Championship Final out of the second heat. Lanza shaved over eight seconds off his previous best, touching the wall in 1:44.51. Lanza now ranks as the eighth-fastest 200 IM swimmer in school history.
Bob Glover qualified for the B Final with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:45.75, ranking him as the 10th-fastest 200 IM swimmer at IU. Tanner Kurz is the top seed for the C Final, coming in with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:46.30. Kurz ranks as the 11th-fastest 200 IM swimmer in school history.
50 Freestyle
Ali Khalafalla had a record swim to lead four Hoosier swimmers in to the finals of the 50 freestyle on Thursday night.
Khlalafalla qualified second overall with a school record and NCAA B cut time of 19.30. The sophomore eclipsed the nearly three-year old record of 19.42 held by Daniel Kanorr.
Anze Tavcar will join Khalafalla in the Championship Final for Indiana, qualifying seventh overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 19.69. Tavcar's time ranks him as the fourth-fastest 50 freestyler in school history.
Oliver Patrouch had a great swim, qualifying for the B Final with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 19.73, ranking him as the fifth-fastest 50 freestyle swimmer in school history. Sam Lorentz made the B Final with a NCAA B cut time of 20.07.
The 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will continue on Thursday night at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center in West Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. On deck for the third session will be the finals of the 400 medley relay, the 500 freestyle, the 200 IM, the 50 freestyle and the 1-meter dive.
