Lanza’s School Record Highlights Friday B1G Prelims for Hoosiers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team continued to rewrite the record books during Friday morning's prelims at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Hoosiers will bring back 14 swimmers total for tonight's finals, with the 3-meter dive prelims to be completed this afternoon. IU will have eight swimmers in the Championship Finals, two in B Finals and four in C Finals.
400 IM
In the 400 IM, Grayson Smith qualified for the Friday night's C Final with a NCAA B cut time of 3:52.26.
Ethan Curl placed 28th overall with a time of 3:56.84, while Jack Collins finished 36th with a personal-best time of 3:59.52. Trey Hubbuch placed 37th with a personal-best mark of 4:00.71.
100 Butterfly
Vini Lanza continued his tremendous Big Ten meet, setting the school record in the 100 butterfly with a NCAA B cut time of 45.94. With his great mark, Lanza is the top qualifier for Friday night's Championship Final.
Joining Lanza in the Championship Final will be Max Irwin, who qualified eighth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 47.24. Oliver Patrouch will swim in the B Final after touching the wall in a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 47.69. Patrouch's mark ranks him in a tie for the eighth-fastest 100 fly swimmer in IU history.
200 Freestyle
IU will bring back a pair of swimmers for the Championship Final of the 200 freestyle, which looks to be one of the most competitive finals at this year's Big Ten Championships.
Anze Tavcar is the top qualifier for the Championship Final, clocking in with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:33.99. Tavcar's time is the seventh-fastest in IU history and ranks him as the second-fastest swimmer in the event at Indiana.
Blake Pieroni qualified third overall for the Championship Final with a NCAA B cut time of 1:34.12. Pieroni set the school record in the event on the first night of this year's Big Ten Championships, leading off the Hoosiers' silver medal-winning 800 freestyle relay team with a split of 1:32.71.
Jackson Miller placed 25th overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:37.93, while Adam Destrampe placed 37th overall with a personal-best time of 1:38.86.
100 Breaststroke
Indiana had a terrific showing in the 100 breaststroke prelims, bringing back all five swimmers for evening finals, including four in the Championship Final.
Tanner Kurz is the top qualifier, touching the wall in a personal-best and NCAA A cut time of 52.07. Kurz's time is the fourth-fastest all-time at IU and ranks him as the second-fastest swimmer in the event at Indiana.
Kurz time was also a Boilermaker Aquatic Center record, breaking the previous mark set by teammate Ian Finnerty just minutes earlier. Finnerty qualified second overall for the Championship Final with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 52.15. Finnerty's time is the sixth-fastest all-time at Indiana and ranks him as the third-fastest swimmer in the 100 breast at IU.
Cody Taylor qualified fifth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 53.22 that ranks hims as the sixth-fastest swimmer in the event at IU. Rounding out the quartet of Hoosier swimmers in the Championship Final is Levi Brock, who qualified eighth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 53.36. Brock's time ranks him as the seventh-fastest swimmer in the event at Indiana.
Sam Apa also had a personal-best swim, qualifying for the B Final with a NCAA B cut time of 54.53. Apa's time ranks him as the 12th-fastest swimmer at IU in the event.
100 Backstroke
Indiana will have four swimmers returning for the evening finals in the 100 backstroke, led by Bob Glover, who qualified third overall. Glover touched the wall in a NCAA B cut time of 46.76 to qualify for the Championship Final.
The Hoosiers will have three swimmers in the C Final, with Joseph Lane qualifying 17th with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 47.88, ranking him in a tie for the seventh-fastest swimmer in the event at IU.
Ryan Gordon qualified 18th overall with a NCAA B cut mark of 47.93, while Ali Khalafalla touched in with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 47.94. Khalafalla's time ranks him as the ninth-fastest swimmer at Indiana in the event.
The 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will continue on Friday evening at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center in West Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. On deck are the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 IM, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 3-meter dive.
