Two More School Records Fall for Indiana on Thursday Night at B1G Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team set two more school records on a successful night at the 2016 Big Ten Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette on Thursday.
Indiana won a gold and silver medal on Thursday night, pushing the team's total to four through two days of competition. The Hoosiers have won one gold and three silver medals headed in to Friday.
IU remains in second place overall at the conference championships with a team score of 452 points. Michigan remains in the lead with a total of 496, while Ohio State is in third place with a score of 427.5. Minnesota (308) and Wisconsin (268) round out the top-five.
In the Championship Final of the 500 freestyle, Max Irwin led the Hoosier charge, placing fifth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 4:19.79. Adam Destrampe finished eighth with a NCAA B qualifying mark of 4:22.67.
Swimming in the B-Final, Ethan Curl placed 13th overall with a time of 4:25.86, while Jackson Miller finished 15th with a mark of 4:26.04. In the C-Final, Trey Hubbuch placed 24th overall with a time of 4:27.73.
Indiana had a strong showing in the Championship Final of the 200 IM, getting three swimmers in the top-7. Ian Finnerty took fourth place with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:43.82 that ranks him as the fourth-fastest 200 IM swimmer in school history.
VIni Lanza was right behind Finnerty, taking fifth place with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:44.16. Lanza's time ranks him as the sixth-fastest 200 IM swimmer at IU. Blake Pieroni took seventh place with a NCAA B cut time of 1:44.84.
Swimming in the B-Final, Bob Glover touched the wall fifth to place 13th overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:45.90. In the C-Final, Tanner Kurz placed sixth to finish 22nd overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:47.21.
After setting the school record in the 50 freestyle prelims Thursday morning, Ali Khalafalla was at it again in the Championship Final, beating his own mark to win silver with a NCAA B cut time of 19.27. The sophomore was only 0.09 seconds off a NCAA A mark. Anze Tavcar also had a personal-best time in the Championship Final, placing fourth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 19.62 that ranks him as the fourth-fastest 50 freestyle swimmer in IU history.
Oliver Patrouch was terrific in the B Final, tying his personal-best to win and place ninth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 19.73. Swimming in the C Final, Sam Lorentz came in second with a NCAA B cut time of 20.01 to place 18th overall.
In the Championship Final of the 1-meter dive, Joshua Arndt placed fifth overall with a total of 360.10. In the prelims, Arndt used a tremendous final dive, scoring 72.50, to vault in to fourth place overall with a score of 338.20.
Also, in the 1-meter dive, Cody Coldren scored five points for the Hoosiers, placing 20th overall with a total of 277.25
The Hoosiers had a historic performance in the 400 medley relay, with the team of Bob Glover, Tanner Kurz, Vini Lanza and Blake Pieroni winning the gold with a school record time of 3:05.61. The mark was also Boilermaker Aquatic Center record and a NCAA A cut. The mark is the fourth-fastest in the nation this season.
The win for Indiana in the 400 medley relay broke an eight-year stretch for Michigan in the event and marked the first time the Hoosiers touched first in the 400 medley relay since 1986.
The 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will continue on Friday morning at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette at 11:00 a.m. The prelims for the 400 IM, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke will begin at 11 a.m. The prelims and consolation finals of the 3-meter dive will begin at 1 p.m.
