Indiana Sets Two More School Records at B1G Prelims on Saturday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team continued to rack up the school records during prelims on Saturday morning at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
Indiana set two school records en route to bringing back an impressive 14 swimmers for tonight's finals. IU will have nine swimmers in the Championship Finals, two in the B Finals and three in the C Finals. Finals for the Platform dive will be determined this afternoon, while the 1,650 freestyle begins at 4:15 p.m.
200 Backstroke
Indiana will bring back three swimmers for Saturday's final in the 200 backstroke, with Bob Glover qualifying as the top seed in the Championship Final. Glover touched the wall in a personal-best and NCAA B cut time that ranks him as the fourth-fastest swimmer in the event in IU history.
Joseph Lane just missed qualifying for the Championship Final, qualifying ninth overall. Lane will swim in the B Final after posting a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:43.46 that ranks him as the seventh-fastest 200 back swimmer in school history.
Wilson Beckman qualified 21st overall and will swim in the C Final after recording a NCAA B cut time of 1:45.16. Ryan Gordon placed 33rd overall with a time of 1:47.84.
100 Freestyle
IU had a great showing in the 100 freestyle prelims, with all five swimmers making it back for the evening finals.
Blake Pieroni continued his tremendous week at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday morning, qualifying first for the Championship Final in the 100 freestyle with a school record and NCAA B cut time of 42.56. Pieroni eclipsed his own school record by over 0.20 seconds and is the eighth-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
IU will have three swimmers in the Championship Final in total, with Ali Khalafalla qualifying third overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 42.82. Khalafalla's time is the third-fastest in school history and ranks him as the second-fastest 100 freestyle swimmer at IU. Anze Tavcar qualified fifth overall for the A-Final, touching in a NCAA B cut time of 42.95.
Oliver Patrouch will swim in the B Final after recording a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 44.06 that ranks him as the 17th-fastest swimmer in the event at Indiana. Sam Lorentz qualified for the C-Final after coming in with a NCAA B cut time of 44.07.
200 Breaststroke
Indiana had a great performance in the 200 breaststroke prelims, with three swimmers qualifying for the Championship Final and one for the C Final.
IU qualified 2-3-4 for the Championship Final, with Tanner Kurz leading the way with a NCAA B cut time of 1:54.41. Ian Finnerty cut over nine seconds off his previous personal best, clocking in with a NCAA B cut time of 1:54.43 to qualify third overall. Finnerty's time ranks him as the fourth-fastest swimmer in the event in school history.
Rounding out the trio of IU swimmers in the Championship Final is Cody Taylor, who qualified fourth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:54.67. Taylor's time ranks him as the fifth-fastest swimmer in the 200 breast at IU.
Levi Brock will swim in the C-Final after qualifying 18th overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:59.26. Brock's time ranks him as the 16th-fastest swimmer in the 200 breast at Indiana. Sam Apa placed 31st overall with a time of 2:02.41.
200 Butterfly
Vini Lanza had yet another record performance for the Hoosiers, as he set the school record in the 200 butterfly on Saturday morning.
Lanza touched the wall in a school record and NCAA B cut time of 1:42.77 to qualify second overall for the Championship Final. Lanza broke the previous record set by Steve Schmuhl in 2014.
Joining Lanza in the Championship Final will be Max Irwin, who qualified fifth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:43.95.
The 2016 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday night at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. On deck will be the finals of the 1,650 freestyle, the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly, platform diving and the 400 freestyle relay.
