Indiana Swimming & Diving Places Second at B1G Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 8-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team finished up competition at the 2016 Big Ten Championships on Saturday night at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Hoosiers finished second overall with 1,306 points, with Michigan winning the conference title with a total of 1,475.5. Ohio State placed third with a score of 1,294.5, while Minnesota (919) and Wisconsin (832.5) rounded out the top-five.
Indiana has finished in the top-3 at the Big Ten Championships for six-straight seasons and the second place finish is the fourth for the Hoosiers in the last six years.
Ian Finnerty was named Big Ten Rookie of the Year after winning gold in the 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay for IU. Finnerty made the Championship Final in all three of his individual events in his first conference championships.
Joining Finnerty on the First-Team All-Big Ten Team was Bob Glover, Ali Khalafalla, Tanner Kurz, Vini Lanza, Blake Pieroni, Oliver Patrouch and Anze Tavcar. Max Irwin, Jackson Miller and Cody Taylor were named Second-Team All-Big Ten, while John Winck was Indiana's Sportsmanship Award honoree.
The Hoosiers won seven medals on Saturday night – two gold, three silver and two bronze – to push the team's total to 17 for the entire conference championship. IU won six gold, seven silver and four bronze medals in total. IU's 17 medals were second only to Michigan's 23 this year and were eight more than Ohio State, who had the third-most with nine.
In the 1,650 freestyle, the Hoosiers had an impressive six swimmers score points. Adam Destrampe led the way, finishing ninth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 15:17.22 that ranks him as the 15th-fastest swimmer in the event at IU.
Trey Hubbuch came in 10th overall with a NCAA B cut time of 15:17.17, while Jack Collins was 11th with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 15:18.41. Collins' time ranks him as the 18th-fastest swimmer in the event in school history. Ethan Curl placed 12th overall with a NCAA B mark of 15:19.05.
Rounding out the scorers for the Hoosiers were Joey Snodderly (15:27.74, NCAA B Cut) and Grayson Smith (15:35.49), who placed 17th and 22nd overall, respectively. Jackson Miller finished 29th with a time of 15:46.77.
Bob Glover had a great swim in the Championship Final of the 200 backstroke, winning the silver medal with a NCAA B cut time of 1:41.87.
Joseph Lane placed 11th overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:44.21, while Wilson Beckman placed 17th overall after winning the C Final with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:44.21. Beckman's time ranks him as the ninth-fastest swimmer in the event at Indiana.
The highlight of the 2016 Big Ten Championships for Indiana came in the Championship Final of the 100 freestyle, as the Hoosiers took the top three spots on the podium.
Blake Pieroni won the gold with a school record and NCAA A cut time of 42.27. Pieroni broke his own previous record by 0.29 seconds and also set a Boilermaker Aquatic Center record in the with his great time. Pieroni is the first Hoosier to win gold in the 100 free at the conference championship since Sam Gasowski took first in 1996.
Anze Tavcar won the silver medal for IU, touching the wall in a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 42.58. Tavcar's time is the third-fastest in school history and ranks him as the second-fastest swimmer in the event at IU.
Not to be outdone, Ali Khalafalla tied for the bronze with Michigan's Paul Powers with a personal-best and NCAA B cut mark of 42.73. Khalafalla's time is the fourth-fastest in program history and ranks him as the third-fastest swimmer at Indiana.
Oliver Patrouch finished 15th overall with a time of 44.40, while Sam Lorentz came in 20th place with a NCAA B cut time of 44.22.
Cody Taylor led a trio of Hoosier swimmers in the Championship Final of the 200 breaststroke, winning the silver medal with a personal-best and NCAA A cut time of 1:52.70. Taylor's time is the fifth-fastest in school history and ranks him as the second-fastest swimmer in the event at IU.
Tanner Kurz placed fourth overall with a NCAA B cut time of 1:54.19, while Ian Finnerty took sixth with a NCAA B cut mark of 1:54.99. Levi Brock placed 21st overall with a time of 2:00.20.
Vini Lanza put an exclamation point on his terrific Big Ten Championships, winning the bronze medal in the 200 butterfly with a school record and NCAA A cut time of 1:42.38. Lanza eclipsed the school record he set this morning in the prelims of 1:42.77 by nearly 0.40 seconds.
Also in the Championship Final of the 200 fly, Max Irwin finished fifth overall with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:43.71. Irwin's time is the 10th-fastest all-time at IU and ranks him as the third-fastest swimmer in the event in school history.
Joshua Arndt and Cody Coldren wrapped a successful Big Ten Championships for the IU divers on Saturday, with each qualifying for the Platform Consolation Final. Arndt tied for 11th overall with a personal-best and NCAA Zones Qualifying score of 335.65, while Cody Codren placed 16th overall with a personal-best total of 288.55.
Arndt and Coldren scored in all three diving events for the Hoosiers, with Arndt winning a bronze medal in the 3-meter dive and placing fifth in the 1-meter. Coldren made Consolation Finals in both the platform and 3-meter for IU, while also scoring points in the Bonus Consolation of the 1-meter.
The Hoosiers ended the 2016 Big Ten Championships on a high note, winning the 400 freestyle relay in a school record time of 2:50.51. The team of Anze Tavcar, Ali Khalafalla, Ian Finnerty and Blake Pieroni broke the Boilermaker Aquatic Center record and also achieved a NCAA A cut with their great swim. The victory in the 400 free relay was the first for the program since 1991.
Over the course of the conference championships, the Hoosiers racked up 14 school record swims, seven Boilermaker Aquatic Center records, 13 NCAA A cuts, 78 NCAA B cuts and 52 personal-best times.
