Lehman’s Homer Lifts IU Past the Islanders, 6-2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Behind a three-run homer by junior Erin Lehman, Indiana Softball defeated Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, 6-2.

The home run was the second of the season for the New Palestine, Ind. native.

Freshman pitcher Tara Trainer (3-4) picked up the win, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out nine.

After walks to senior Kelsey Dotson and junior CaraMia Tsirigos to start the second inning, Lehman knocked the ball past the left field fence to give Indiana a 3-0 lead.

The Hoosiers didn't have to wait long to add to the lead as a walk to sophomore Rebecca Blitz and a hit batter in sophomore Aimilia McDonough put two on with no outs in the third. Both runners advanced on a double steal to set the stage for Dotson, who hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Blitz. A left-field double by Tsirigos scored McDonough to push the lead to 5-0. The final Hoosier run came on an Islander error, which scored senior Alyssa Rosati, who pinch ran for Tsirigos.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi got on the board in the sixth inning as the Islanders had runners on the corners with one out for Liz Carter, who hit a RBI single to right. After a hit batter loaded the bases, the Islanders got their second run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice.

However, they would get no closer as pitcher Emily Kirk retired the next five batters to seal the win.

Next up, the Hoosiers face No. 16 Texas A&M this evening at 6:15.
