BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana continued its impressive home record when it swept a double-header on Sunday, Feb. 28. The No. 63-ranked Hoosiers (9-3) began the day with a 5-2 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles (5-4) and closed out the day topping the Eastern Illinois Panthers (5-4), 4-3.
For the second day in a row, doubles were dominant again for the Hoosiers as they grabbed the doubles point over Marquette behind a 6-0 victory from Danielle Wolf and Madison Appel at No. 3. After the freshman duo set the tone for doubles play, IU's Stephanie Smith and Kim Schmider clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Sarah McLean added to her impressive season with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2, she is 10-0 in singles play this year. The Hoosiers got a big lift with a pair of tiebreaker victories, one from Smith (No. 3) and the other was the match clinching victory from Natalie Whalen (No. 4).
Each match on the day brought a different lineup due to the injury of Appel. Appel suffered her injury during doubles play against Marquette and was unable to compete in the singles lineup against MU or in the entire match against EIU.
"I was really proud of the way the team stepped up against Marquette," said head coach Lin Loring. "Everybody had to play one position up in singles and that made for a very competitive match. We had to play some very good tennis to get the win."
Against EIU, Indiana's normal singles starters at No. 1, No.4 and No. 5 were unable to go due to injury.
In doubles, the Hoosiers found themselves in a shuffled lineup as well. That didn't matter. For the third straight match, the Hoosiers claimed the doubles point with help from a 6-2 win by Paula Gutierrez and McLean at No.2, followed by a 6-3 win off the racquets of Schmider and Smith at No. 1.
Already down a match score due to the No. 6 singles spot going to EIU by default due to the Appel injury, the Hoosiers prevailed and started singles off with a bang. Gutierrez didn't waste her opportunity at the No. 1 singles spot beating Eastern Illinois's Kelly Iden 6-0, 6-2.
McLean kept her perfect season alive as she won her 11th straight singles match, this one 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
The day's final match victory for the Hoosiers came from Schmider who fended off Eastern Illinois' Hannah Kimbrough 6-1, 6-4 for the No. 4 singles victory.
"The afternoon match was another gut check for the team," Loring said. "We had to play the singles with five players and only three of our starters. I was proud of the way the team met the challenge. This was another match we could have easily lost."
The Hoosiers will once again play a doubleheader next Saturday, March 5. The first match will be against Old Dominion, which starts at 10 a.m. ET. The second match will see the Hoosiers face up against Southern Illinois-Carbondale with a start time at 2:30 p.m.
