Hoosiers Split Final Matches Before Conference Play

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team, ranked 49^th nationally, completed its non-conference slate with a doubleheader against the 63^rd-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs and the Southern Illinois Salukis. The first match of the day went to the Monarchs (6-4), 4-3, but the Hoosiers (10-4) rebounded for an afternoon defeat of the Salukis (8-5), 5-2.

As the Hoosiers have done all year, the doubles teams came out firing and notched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. At No. 1, IU's Sarah McLean and Natalie Whalen won 6-1. Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith clinched the doubles point with the 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

Singles didn't provide much service for the Hoosiers as they quickly saw their 1-0 match lead turn into a 2-1 Monarchs lead. At No. 1 singles, IU's Madison Appel provided relief for the Hoosiers with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win.

At No. 2 singles, the Monarchs got the lead back and didn't give it up as a tight third set win at No. 3 singles by Old Dominion's Natalia Vlasova clinched the team victory.

In the afternoon match with SIU, doubles thrived again for the Hoosiers as Schmider and Smith set the tone with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. The doubles point clinching win would come shortly after as yet again the freshmen pair of Danielle Wolf and Appel won at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Singles would see a shakeup in the IU lineup as Wolf moved up from the No. 6 spot to the No. 4 position. IU's Schmider inserted herself into the lineup at the No.5 singles spot and Sarah Baron also moved into the Hoosiers lineup at No. 6 singles. With a new look lineup, it was the regular No. 2 singles player Paula Gutierrez who jumped start the Hoosiers with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

The Salukis would put themselves in a good position until Schmider put the Hoosiers up 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at her No. 5 singles spot.

After a morning in which she saw her perfect singles streak come to an end, IU's Sarah McLean clinched the match victory over the Salukis with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

The Hoosiers can now look forward to Big Ten play which will begin Saturday, March 12 with a 11 a.m. ET match against Iowa in the IU Tennis Center.
