Redshirt freshman Jake Brown posted 62 in his final round, one stroke shy of the school record
GOODYEAR, Arizona – The Indiana men's golf team finished second at the Loyola Intercollegiate after posting a final round team score of 278 (-10) to give them a team score of 842 (-22). It's the best team finish since winning the NYX Hoosier Invitational in 2013.
"I knew that we were getting better as this season has gone one and this result helps show our guys that we are," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "Although we really wanted to come out here and win, there were some positives up and down the lineup and everyone was able to contribute."
Leading the way for Indiana on the final day was redshirt freshman Jake Brown, who posted a 62 (-10) in his final round to fall just one shot shy of tying the IU record for lowest single round score (Jeff Overton – Xavier Invitational – 2004). Brown finished the tournament in second place individually with a score of 202 (-14), which is tied for the sixth-best individual score in IU history.
Brown opened his round with back-to-back pars, but then reeled off four birdies over the next five holes to go out in 32. He then started the back nine with a birdie and a 25-foot eagle on the first two holes before a birdie on 14 followed by birdies on 17 and 18 to close out the round with a 30 on the back nine. He also started the tournament with a 30 on his first nine holes in round one.
"I got off to a bit of a slow start with two pars but then after I made those four birdies on the front, I had a lot of confidence," Brown said after the round. "And then I knew I had some reachable holes to start the back nine so when I made the eagle on 11, I knew there was potential for a special round."
Joining Brown in the top 10 was sophomore Brendon Doyle, whose final round 71 put him at 8-under for the tournament (208) and a tie for eighth individually. The 208 total score is a career-best for the Louisville native.
Keegan Vea finished the tournament with a score of 217 over the three rounds, including a 74 in Tuesday's final round to finish in a tie for 33rd individually.
Max Kollin posted three birdies and two bogeys on his way to a 1-under par round of 71 in the final round. His total score of 218 put him in a tie for 38th with his best tournament score of the season.
Andrew Havill finished in a tie for 41st after his final round score of 74 gave him a total score of 219 for the tournament.
And Jack Sparrow, playing as an individual, finished with a total score of 229 after his final round score of 75.
"We know there are still areas that we need to get better, in particular our short game," Mayer said. "But we have a month to work on it and get ready to make a push down the home stretch of the season."
Next up for the Hoosiers will be their only home tournament of the season, as they host the NYX Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course from April 2-3.
