BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – With winds blowing at 25 miles per hour and gusts near 40 miles per hour, play was officially suspended just after the start of the second round of the 2016 Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course on Saturday.
Indiana sits in third place as a team after a first round team score of 291 (+7), trailing first place Western Illinois by four shots and second place Ohio by just one heading into the second round.
All teams had at least started their second round when play was suspended. The teams will return to the course on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. to complete round two, with the tournament being shortened to just 36 holes.
When the first round began at 9:00 a.m., Indiana redshirt freshman Jake Brown showed he was ready to go, as he birdied his first two holes – holes 1 and 2 – to jump out to 2-under par. He posted par on the rest of his front nine and, after a bogey on 11, found two more birdies on hole 14 and 15 to get to three under on his round. But the wind had started to increase by then and he closed with bogeys on 17 and 18 to finish at 1-under par for the round and a tie for third place individually.
Senior Max Kollin started his round with a bogey on hole 4 but rebounded quickly with a birdies on the next hole to get back to even. After running off four straight pars, he went birdie-bogey on 11 and 12 before closing his back nine with a double bogey on 18, with the wind playing a significant role on that hole. But he came back on his final hole of the round – hole 3 – to record a birdie and finish at 1-over par 72, which is tied for eighth place individually.
Joining Brown and Kollin in the top 12 on the individual leaderboard is junior Andrew Havill. After a bogey on the 18th hole to put him at 3-over par for his round, Havill birdied hole 1 to get back to 2-over for the round and a tie for 12th place.
Brendon Doyle was 2-under through his first three holes, but a pair of tough stretches late on the front nine and early on the back nine saw him finish with a 76 and a tie for 31st.
Keegan Vea was not able to get his round going in a positive direction on the back nine and finished with a score of 79.
Leading the way for the Indiana "B" team was redshirt freshman Jack Sparrow's 5-over par 76, followed by sophomore Christian Fairbanks score of 77. Trevor Ranton posted a 79 while Will Seger and Matthew Weber both posted rounds of 82.
