BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind freshman Tara Trainer's first career no-hitter and a grand slam from senior Kelsey Dotson, Indiana Softball defeated Evansville in five innings on Saturday, 8-0.
The no-hitter is the first for the Hoosiers since Meaghan Murphy no-hit Miami (Ohio) on Feb. 15, 2013. Additionally, Trainer's 13 strikeouts is the most since Murphy tossed the same number against Michigan State on April 9, 2014.
After being shutout against Ohio earlier in the day, 6-0, the Indiana bats responded with the highest run total of the season.
The Hoosiers put up the first run in the second inning as sophomore Taylor Uden scored on an Evansville fielding error after fellow sophomore Rachel O'Malley's singled. O'Malley advanced to third on that same error then scored one batter later as freshman Sarah Galovich reached on a second Purple Aces' error.
Indiana broke open the game in the third via senior Kelsey Dotson's third career grand slam. The shot to center scored sophomore Rebecca Blitz and junior Erin Lehman, who had both reached on a pair of singles, as well as senior Shannon Cawley who reached on an Evansville error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
The Purple Aces' fourth error of the game allowed the Hoosiers to walk away with a shortened five-inning win as a throwing error allowed Uden to reach first base and gave Cawley and Lehman the opportunity to score.
In the day's first game, the Hoosier offense was unable to get into a groove as the lone Indiana hit of the game came from sophomore Rebecca Blitz on a bunt single in the third inning.
The Bobcats struck first as they plated a run in the first frame off an RBI single by Casie Hutchinson. Hutchinson was then brought in on a single by Sloan Walker four batters later.
Indiana kept the Bobcats' lead to just 2-0 until the sixth inning when Ohio put up four runs on four hits and a Hoosier error.
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow as they again face Evansville at 12:15 p.m. in day two of the Indiana Classic.
