IU Sweeps Day Two of Indiana Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind two more dominant pitching performances from freshmen pitchers Josie Wood and Tara Trainer, Indiana Softball swept the second day of the Indiana Classic, defeating Evansville, 2-1, and Drake, 1-0.
In the first game of the day, Wood tossed her ninth complete game of the year, striking out five while allowing just one run on four hits and one walk.
Both of Indiana's runs came in the first frame. After sophomore Rebecca Blitz was hit by a pitch and junior Erin Lehman earned a walk, the duo both stole a base to put themselves in scoring position. Blitz was then brought in on a sacrifice fly by senior Kassi Farmer. Two pitches later, Lehman scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
The Purple Aces answered back in the fourth on a solo homer by Chandra Parr to lead off the frame. Wood responded and shut the door by putting down the next 11 Evansville batters in order, a streak that stayed intact until a pair of singles in the seventh inning.
In the second game of the day, Trainer followed up her no-hit performance against Evansville on Saturday with a two-hit outing against Drake. Trainer struck out seven and allowed just two walks in the 1-0 shutout win.
Indiana once again jumped ahead in the first frame as Blitz scored on a throwing error from the Bulldog catcher as she attempted to catch Lehman stealing second base.
The early run would prove to be enough as Trainer's only hits surrendered came on a single in the third and another in the sixth. The Bulldogs only had two runners in scoring position during the game and never saw a runner advance past second base.
The Hoosiers (14-9) are looking for their fourth straight victory as they face Drake (8-9) again Monday afternoon in the final day of the Indiana Classic. The two teams will square off at 1 p.m. at Andy Mohr Field.
