BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind the biggest offensive output of the season and solid pitching performances from freshmen Josie Wood and Tara Trainer, Indiana Softball defeated Indiana State on Wednesday afternoon, 12-5.
The 12 runs scored is the highest of the year, while IU saw three Hoosiers – senior Michelle Huber, Katelyn Conenna and Rebecca Blitz – plate at least two runs.
Indiana had to bounce back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit as a pair of hits and a Hoosier throwing error allowed Indiana State to take the lead.
IU (17-10) got on the board in the bottom of the first frame as Huber plated Blitz on a doubleplay ball. Conenna cut the deficit to 3-2 as she led off the second frame with her first homerun of the season on a shot to left field.
A five-run third inning proved to be the difference maker for the Hoosiers as a trio of singles and a Sycamore error allowed Indiana to take the lead for good. Huber's RBI single to center tied the game as she plated junior Erin Lehman. One batter later, senior Kassi Farmer reached on an error, allowing senior Alyssa Rosati to score from third. A single by sophomore Taylor Uden brought in Huber and loaded the bases for sophomore Rachel O'Malley, who earned a walk to plate Farmer. The final score of the frame came as Conenna was brought in another doubleplay ball.
Conenna, who went 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk, added to the lead in the fourth as she singled to score Huber, while senior Shannon Cawley scored on the same play via an Indiana State fielding error.
The Sycamores looked to rally in the fifth as an RBI single and groundout cut the Indiana lead to 9-5.
However, they would get no closer as Trainer entered the game and went 2.0 hitless innings, surrendering just one walk. Wood (9-4) walked away with the win as she went 5.0 innings and allowed just six hits and one earned run.
While the Hoosier pitching staff shut down the Sycamores, the bats were not finished as a fifth-inning RBI single from sophomore Erin Lehman made it 10-5 before a sixth-inning solo shot by Huber and RBI groundout by Uden pushed the lead to 12-5.
Indiana opens up Big Ten play this weekend as the Hoosiers play host to Iowa for a three-game set beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
