BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball opened the Big Ten season with a 5-3 victory against Iowa on Friday night. The Hoosiers saw three batters pick up multi-hit games while freshman pitcher Tara Trainer went the distance, tossing 12 strikeouts.
The 12 strikeout-game was the fifth time this season the righty has fanned at least 10 batters.
On the other side of the plate, sophomore Rebecca Blitz, junior Erin Lehman and senior Kassi Farmer each collected a pair of hits.
Indiana (18-10, 1-0 Big Ten) did have to play from behind early as a two-out RBI double by Holly Hoffman brought in Kaitlyn Mullarkey in the first inning.
However, the Hoosiers responded quickly as they plated four runs on a trio of hits and three bases-loaded walks. After a leadoff single by Blitz and a double from Lehman put runners on the corners, junior CaraMia Tsirigos walked to load the bags. Seniors Michelle Huber and Katelyn Conenna then earned bases-loaded walk to make it 2-1. An RBI single by Farmer plated Tsirigos before sophomore Taylor Uden's bases-loaded walk scored Huber to push the lead to 4-1.
The Hawkeyes (8-17, 0-1 Big Ten) closed the deficit to 4-3 in the third inning on a two-run homer to left by Mallory Killian. They would get no closer as Trainer retired 13 of the final 15 batters to shut the door.
Conenna picked up her second RBI of the day in the sixth as her single to centerfield scored sophomore Sarah Thompson.
Indiana and Iowa return to action at Andy Mohr Field tomorrow at 1 p.m.
