BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk coming off a victory against the No. 1 doubles team in the country last week gave the Hoosiers early momentum with a 6-3 win in doubles, but it wasn't enough as No. 10 Illinois won the doubles point and the match 4-0 at the IU Tennis Center on Friday night.
Following the victory at No. 1 doubles, Illinois took the No. 2 doubles match and all eyes turned to the No. 3 court. Trailing 5-4 Raheel Manji and Afonso Salgado came back to push the match to a tiebreak. The Indiana duo had match point at 7-6 but couldn't convert and Illinois won the tiebreak, match and doubles point with a 7-6 (9-7) victory.
The Fighting Illini (9-7) won five of six first sets, but the Hoosiers (4-11) battled back as Monette came back to win his second set. After dropping a second set, freshman Antonio Cembellin got out to a 4-0 lead in set three. After dropping a first set senior Daniel Bednarczyk forced a tiebreak in his second set.
Despite the fight from Indiana, Illinois won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 4 singles to clinch the match and take a 4-0 victory.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Northwestern for a match on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
