AUBURN, Ala. – Behind another dominant performance in the circle and a balanced outing at the plate, Indiana Softball (10-7) defeated Murray State on Saturday, 5-1.
Freshman pitcher Tara Trainer earned the win as she tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk while striking out 10, tying her career high mark that she has set two other times this season. After giving up a leadoff hit to start Murray State's second inning, Trainer sat down 15 straight Racers to take her through the sixth inning.
The Indiana pitching staff has now registered seven games on the year with at least 10 strikeouts, which is the most in a single season since 2011.
On the other side of the ball, Indiana saw six different Hoosiers collect a hit in the win, including sophomores Taylor Uden and Rebecca Blitz who each collected a pair of RBI.
Junior CaraMia Tsirigos put Indiana on the board in the fourth as she knocked an RBI single through the left side to score sophomore Sarah Thompson. One batter later, Uden sent a single up the middle to score seniors Alyssa Rosati and Kelsey Dotson and make it 3-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.
Indiana built onto the lead as O'Malley was hit by a pitch and junior Erin Lehman singled to put two on for Blitz in the sixth. Following a wild pitch to put both in scoring position, Blitz sent a double down the left field line to make it 5-0.
Murray State (6-6) got on the board in the final frame as a leadoff homer by Jessica Twaddle made it 5-1. However, sophomore Emily Kirk picked up a strikeout and retired the final two batters via a fielder's choice to end the game.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday morning as they once again face Murray State at 11 a.m. ET in the final day of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic.
