AUBURN, Ala. – A walk-off single by freshman Sarah Galovich broke a scoreless stalemate and propelled Indiana Softball to a 1-0 victory against Murray State on Sunday morning.
Freshman pitcher Josie Wood earned her third complete game shutout of her career as she allowed just three hits while striking out seven Racers.
Senior Michelle Huber led off the seventh frame with a double to center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Katelyn Conenna. Junior CaraMia Tsirigos earned a walk to put runners on the corners with one away. After senior Alyssa Rosati came in to pinch run for Huber at third, freshman Sarah Galovich single to second base to bring in the winning run in Rosati. The RBI was the first of Galovich's career.
Both teams had opportunities to put up runs early on. Indiana's best chance came in the third as junior Erin Lehman and sophomore Rebecca Blitz were both in scoring position with one out. Lehman reached on a single to short while Blitz got on base following a Racer fielding error on a sacrifice bunt, allowing both to advance a base. However, Lehman was tagged out at home as she attempted to score on a fielder's choice by sophomore Aimilia McDonough.
The Racers led off the top of the fourth frame with a single through the right side. However, Wood forced a pop up on a bunt, leading to a double play at first base. Including the fourth inning, Murray State put the leadoff batter on base in four consecutive innings, but Wood and the Indiana defense worked themselves out of every jam.
The win secured a 3-1 record on the weekend and improved Indiana's overall mark to 11-7.
Up next, the Hoosiers head to Lexington, Ky. on Wednesday for the first midweek battle of the season as they take on currently-ranked No. 17 Kentucky. Following that game, Indiana opens up home play at Andy Mohr Field in the Indiana Classic.
