LEXINGTON, Ky. – Indiana Softball dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 17 Kentucky on Wednesday night. The first Hoosier (11-8) base runner came on a one-out single by senior Kassi Farmer as Wildcat pitcher Meagan Prince had a perfect game going into the final frame.
Farmer's single was hit sharply to Kentucky shortstop Christian Stokes, who made a diving grab but delivered a throw that arrived just after Farmer touched the bag. Farmer advanced to second on a groundout by senior Shannon Cawley. After senior Alyssa Rosati was sent in to run, senior Kelsey Dotson sent a single down the left field line to score Rosati.
While Kentucky (19-3) put runners on base throughout the game, the Wildcats didn't register their first run until the fifth inning when a solo home run by Maisie Steed ended the stalemate.
Kentucky added two more runs in the frame as Hannah Huffman scored following a Hoosier throwing error, then Katie Reed stole home on a double steal as Abbey Cheek took second.
Freshman Tara Trainer took the loss as she allowed three runs, with two being earned, in five innings of work. Fellow freshman Josie Wood tossed the sixth inning and picked up a pair of strikeouts while walking one Wildcat.
Up next, the Hoosiers open up play at home in this weekend's Indiana Classic. The event runs Saturday through Monday at Andy Mohr Field. Admission is free of charge.
