
Hoosiers Fall in Big Ten Opener to Rutgers, 7-1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Indiana Baseball (12-12, 0-1) dropped its Big Ten opener to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights by a count of 7-1 on Friday afternoon at Bainton Field. Despite taking an early lead, IU surrendered four runs in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference.
Sophomore Laren Eustace led the Hoosiers with two hits on the day, upping his season batting average to .321. Freshmen Scotty Bradley and Ryan Fineman each doubled in the loss, while junior Craig Dedelow drove in the lone run for Indiana.
Senior Kyle Hart struck out six batters in six innings of work. Sophomore B.J. Sabol was strong in relief, striking out two in 1.1 innings.
Hart came out dealing, punching out four batters through the first two innings to keep the game knotted up at 0-0. Indiana struck first in the top of the third, plating one on three singles which started with an infield bunt hit for senior Brian Wilhite. After Eustace singled to move Wilhite to third, Dedelow drove in the first run on a single to center.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Scarlet Knights loaded the bases with no outs, leading to two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout. Then with two outs, an RBI double and RBI single upped the Scarlet Knight lead to 4-1.
The Hoosiers put two runners on base in the top of the eighth, but a groundout ended the threat to keep the score at 4-1. Rutgers came back in the bottom half and added three more insurance runs to make it a 7-1 game.
Rutgers out-hit Indiana, 11-7, while the Hoosiers left six on base for the game. Howie Brey tossed a complete game for the Scarlet Knights, scattering seven hits over the nine innings while striking out eight.
Indiana and Rutgers will play the second game of its three game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bainton Field.
