BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball could not overcome four Wolverine home runs as the Hoosiers dropped the first game of a three-game set with No. 2 Michigan on Friday night, 11-5.

Michigan (25-3, 3-1 Big Ten) jumped out early as a pair of homers by Sierra Romero and Kelsey Susalla made it 3-0 in the first inning. The Wolverines used a two-run home run by Sierra Lawrence to push the advantage to 5-0 in the second frame.

The Hoosiers (20-11, 3-1 Big Ten) responded in the third inning as they plated a trio of runs to cut the deficit to 5-3. After freshman Sarah Galovich and sophomore Rebecca Blitz singled to start the frame, junior Erin Lehman loaded the bases as she reached on a fielder's choice and Galovich beat the throw at third base. Junior CaraMia Tsirigos then popped a single to center field to bring in Galovich. A fielder's choice by senior Michelle Huber and a sacrifice fly by Katelyn Conenna then brought it Blitz and Lehman.

However, Michigan's fourth homer of the game, this time a two-run shot by Lindsay Montemarano in the fourth, kept the Hoosiers at arm's length. The Wolverines further extended their lead in the fifth off an RBI double by Romero and an RBI single from Susalla.

Michigan's final runs of the game came on a two-out two RBI double by Montemarano to make it 11-3 in the top of the seventh.

Indiana wouldn't go quietly as the Hoosiers loaded the bases with a pair of outs in the bottom of the final inning. Senior Shannon Cawley then stepped in and doubled to right center to plate Conenna and sophomore Sarah Thompson. However, Michigan's Megan Betsa picked up her eighth strikeout of the game to end the threat.

The teams will return to Andy Mohr Field on Saturday afternoon for game two. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Admission to all IU Softball home games is free of charge.
