BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings to No. 2 Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines struck early as a two-run homerun by Sierra Romero brought in Sierra Lawrence in the first inning.
Indiana (20-12, 3-2 Big Ten) looked to respond in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Rebecca Blitz led off with a single then stole second to get in scoring position. However, she was left stranded.
Michigan (26-3, 4-1 Big Ten) threatened to add to the lead in the second as the Wolverines loaded the bases with a pair of outs, but freshman pitcher Josie Wood forced a fielder's choice to end the frame. However, the Wolverines did plate a third run in the next inning as Alex Sobczak doubled to left center to score Lindsay Montemarano.
The Hoosiers put base runners in scoring position in each of the next two innings as junior Erin Lehman singled in the third then advanced to second on a walk by junior CaraMia Tsirigos and senior Shannon Cawley doubled to lead off the fourth. But the Hoosiers were unable to capitalize as they were shut out for just the fourth time of the season.
Michigan broke open the game in the fourth as the Wolverines plated four runs on a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. The final run of the game came in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to score Mary Sbonek.
This marks the first time this season the Hoosiers have lost in a run-rule decision.
Indiana and Michigan will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all IU Softball home games is free of charge.
