Senior Evan Bell went 5.1 innings in the no-decision, striking out five. Freshman Paul Milto pitched between a nearly two-hour rain delay to pick up his fourth win. He went 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, while allowing one hit and one run. Making his fourth appearance of the week in as many games, junior Thomas Belcher grabbed his fourth save and tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
Sophomore Logan Sowers powered the Hoosiers' offense with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, including a triple and the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Brian Wilhite led Indiana with two RBI in a 2-for-4 performance, while three other Hoosiers plated one run, including freshman Ryan Fineman, junior Austin Cangelosi, and freshman Scotty Bradley.
Indiana put a pair on in the bottom of the second as Cangelosi reached base on a hit-by-pitch and Wilhite bunted his way on with a single. Cangelosi would be stranded at third base after advancing on sophomore Isaiah Pasteur's fielder's choice.
Bell retired the first seven Boilermakers he faced, three of whom fell by strikeout before three hits allowed Purdue to plate three runs in the third. Junior Craig Dedelow belted a ball just feet of a home run in the bottom half, resulting in a double. Wilhite's single and a fielding error on Fineman's ball loaded the bases but Purdue was able to retire the next two batters.
Purdue put two on in the top of the fourth, but junior Tony Butler quickly ended the frame with a 4-3 unassisted double play. The Hoosiers took advantage of the double play ball again in the fifth to freeze a runner a third with an inning-ending 6-3 double play.
Free passes to sophomore Laren Eustace and Fineman, along with a single through the right side by Dedelow loaded the bases for Indiana again in the fifth. A wild pitch scored Eustace to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Purdue added two more runs to its lead in the sixth to make it 5-1, but a 4-6-3 double play left the bases loaded.
After nearly a two-hour rain delay, Milto retook the mound, worked around a walk and picked up two strikeouts in the top of the seventh.
Indiana's bats heated up following the delay, as a five-run bottom of the eighth inning gave the Hoosiers their first lead of the game. Sowers stroked a two-out triple to right-center field and came in to score on Fineman's double to center field. After freshman Luke Miller reached base via a hit-by-pitch, Cangelosi sent a two-strike pitch back up the middle to score one and cut the deficit to 5-3. Back-to-back doubles by Wilhite and Bradley, who pinch hit, put Indiana up, 6-5.
Purdue evened the game back up at 6-6 in the top of the eighth, but Sowers' solo shot in the bottom half gave Indiana back its lead, 7-6.
Indiana is back in action this Wednesday as it hosts Ball State at 6:05 p.m.
