BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Powered by a strong outing from the bats and the first career victory from sophomore pitcher Emily Kirk, Indiana Softball defeated Penn State on Sunday in six innings, 11-2.
Kirk went all six innings for the Hoosiers (22-16, 5-6 Big Ten), allowing just two runs on seven hits in her first complete game appearance.
On the other side of the ball, Indiana saw four Hoosiers score multiple runs while junior Erin Lehman picked up a pair of hits and junior CaraMia Tsirigos collected three base knocks.
The Nittany Lions (19-17, 8-3 Big Ten) jumped out early in the first inning as they used four singles to plate a pair of runs.
Tsirigos looked to answer for the Hoosiers as she sent a two-out double to the corner in left in the bottom of the inning, but a groundout ended the inning.
Indiana did respond in the second inning as the Hoosiers took advantage of a pair of Penn State throwing errors. After senior Katelyn Conenna led off with a single, she was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from senior Kassi Farmer. A throwing error at first put runners on the corners as sophomore Taylor Uden reached and Conenna moved to third. Conenna then scored as sophomore Rachel O'Malley reached on a second throwing error. Uden tied the game up at 2-2 as she scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Sarah Galovich.
After a couple scoreless frames, Indiana went back to work in the fifth, scoring four runs. After sophomore Rebecca Blitz led off the inning with a single, she stole second then advanced to third on a throwing error by the Nittany Lions' catcher. A single from Lehman plated Blitz to give Indiana the 3-2 lead. After Tsirigos drew a walk, Indiana loaded the bags as Lehman escaped a wild rundown at third base on a grounder by senior Michelle Huber. Uden was then hit by a pitch to score Lehman before an RBI fielder's choice before freshman Sarah Galovich singled to center to plate Conenna and push Indiana's lead to 6-2.
One inning later, the Hoosiers put an early end to the game as they scored five runs, capped by a three-run homer by Uden. Lehman started the stretch as she singled to right and was brought in by Tsirigos' third hit of the game, a double off the top of the fence. Huber then doubled to put runners on second and third for Conenna, who hit a sacrifice fly to plate Tsirigos. Farmer then reached on a Nittany Lion fielding error to set the stage for Uden, who sent the ball over the fence in left center.
Indiana returns to action on Tuesday as they play host to Louisville at 6 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
