BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Seven runs split between the first two innings was all Indiana baseball (19-13, 6-2 Big Ten) needed to up its winning-streak to eight games and dish the Iowa Hawkeyes an 8-2 loss on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Caleb Baragar got the start on the bump and went seven innings, scattering six hits with four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run in his third win of the season. Freshman Paul Milto closed out the final two innings surrendering just two hits and striking out three.
Junior Craig Dedelow provided the bulk of Indiana's scoring with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the first inning. The Hoosiers' three through six batters each chipped in an RBI in the win, with freshman Ryan Fineman going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while freshman Scotty Bradley tagged three hits and an RBI. Sophomore Logan Sowers added the Hoosiers' other home run, with freshman Luke Miller punching in RBI in a 1-for-3 day.
Baragar took six pitches to retire the side to open the game before Indiana's offense broke loose for four hits and three runs in the home half. Dedelow got the damage started with a two-run home run just shy of the 408-marker in right field, which also scored Alex Krupa, who singled to lead-off the inning. Back-to-back doubles by Fineman and Bradley put two in scoring position for Miller, who upped the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to straightaway center.
With two away in the bottom of the second, the Hoosiers upped their lead to 4-0 with Dedelow's third RBI of the game, a single through the right side, which scored senior Brian Wilhite, who walked. Fineman made it 6-0 with a single down the line in right, scoring Dedelow. A fielding error on the play on the Hawkeyes' right fielder granted Fineman second base and also scored Sowers. Bradley's RBI single to left field then added Indiana's fourth run of the frame.
Iowa connected for its first hit in the top of the third and trimmed the deficit to 7-1. The Hawkeyes fell in order in the fourth, with Baragar picking up his second strikeout of the day. A failed pickoff attempt in the top of the sixth led to Iowa scoring its second run of the day to make it 7-2.
Sowers connected on a pitch in the sixth and drove it over the wall in left center for a solo shot to boost the Hoosiers' lead to 8-2. Iowa tested Baragar in the seventh, eventually working runners onto the corners but sophomore Isaiah Pasteur finished a 5-3 putout to halt the threat.
Milto worked around two base runners in the eighth and closed it out for the Hoosiers in the ninth.
