COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following an opening round team score of 300, the Indiana women's golf team rallied to put together the best team score of the day in round two – 2-under par 286 – and moved up to second place after 36 holes of the Lady Buckeye Invitational.
The tournament is being played at the Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course and hosted by Ohio State. The tournament allows teams to play six players and only count the four best scores, replicating the format at the Big Ten Championship next weekend.
Indiana senior Camille Chevalier opened with a 75 in her first round but turned things around in the afternoon to card a 2-under 70. Her total score of 145 leaves her in a tie for fourth place individually. Chevalier began her first round with a bogey on her opening hole – the fifth. She got back to even par with a birdie on hole 8 before rattling off 11 straight pars before closing bogey-par-double for a 75.
In round two, Chevalier finished with five birdies and three bogeys on her way to 2-under par 70. She opened with five pars before a birdie on hole 10. But back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 put her over par for the round. However, she closed the back nine strong with birdies on 16 and 18 and then made it three in a row with birdies on 1 and 2 to get to 3-under on the round. After a bogey on the third hole, her 17th of the day, she was back to 2-under on the round and among the leaders individually. Three of her last five rounds have been under par as she looks for her third straight Top 20 finish.
Freshman Erin Harper, who went to high school just minutes from the Scarlet Course, started her day with a 74 in the morning before finishing strong in round two to post Even par 72. Her total score of 146 is tied for seventh individually.
Harper started her first round on the seventh hole and made bogey on 10 and 11 to fall to 2-over par for her round. A bogey on the 17th and first holes put her at 4-over before birdies on 3 and 4 gave her a score of 74. In round two, Harper would once again finish her round strong, posting birdies on 4 and 6 to get back to even par. Those birdies helped offset a double bogey on hole 1 and a bogey on 13 after she had played the back nine in 2-under par.
Alix Kong joins Harper in a tie for seventh place with her total score of 146 after rounds of 75 and 71 on the first day. Kong's first round featured 15 pars and three bogeys – on holes 6, 7 and 8. Starting her round on the eighth hole, Kong was able to put those bogeys on 6 and 7 out her mind as she began round two on the eighth hole as well. She birdied holes 9 and 10 in her second round and would par the remaining eight holes to turn to the frong nine at 2-under par. A bogey on hole 1 set her back a stroke but she made it up on the sixth hole again with a birdie before finishing with a bogey on the seventh hole.
Ana Sanjuan gives the Hoosiers four players inside the Top 15 after her scores of 76 and 73 give her a score of 149 and a tie for 14th place individually. She carded five bogeys and two birdie in her first round. Her second round featured four birdies and five bogeys but she played her final nine holes in 1-under par to finish strong.
Theresa-Ann Jedra was steady in her first two rounds, making it two straight solid showings after she helped the Hoosiers at Briar's Creek the last time out. On Saturday in Columbus, she opened with a 79 in round one before coming back with a 78 in the second round.
Pear Siriko rounded out the IU team lineup with scores of 81 and 84 while Maria Mancini, competing as an individual, registered a pair of 81's on her day.
The final 18 holes of the Lady Buckeye will get underway on Sunday with tee times of holes 1 and 10. The Hoosiers will be in the last groups off the No. 1 starting at 9:40 a.m. Live scoring is available through Golfstat.com.
