BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – After windy conditions on Saturday caused the 2016 Hoosier Invitational to be shortened to 36 holes at the IU Golf Course, the Indiana men's golf team posted a team score of 297 on Sunday and took home third place honors with an overall score of 588 (+20).
The top individual performance for Indiana came from redshirt freshman Jake Brown, who closed with a 72 on Sunday to finish at Even par for the tournament and tie for co-medalist honors with four other players. Brown is the first medalist for Indiana since Andrew Fogg won the NYX Hoosier Invitational in April of 2013.
"I thought Jake had a tremendous tournament," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "He had a tough stretch in the middle of his round today but he righted the ship as best he could and posted the best score possible. It's always a positive to have someone at the top of the leaderboard so that's exciting for Jake."
This third place team finish is coming on the heels of a second place finish at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Arizona (April 28-March 1). The last time Indiana posted back-to-back top three finishes was the spring of 2013 when they won the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular (March 16-17) and the NYX Hoosier Invitational (April 6-7).
"I didn't think we responded as well as we needed to to some tough conditions out here the last two days," Mayer said. "Jake played great and we just needed a couple other guys to follow his lead and that didn't happen for us this week."
In the final round, Brown carded three birdies and six pars on his front nine. On the back side, he posted four consecutive bogeys on holes 11 through 14 to put him at one over par for the day.
Junior Andrew Havill had a steady round on Sunday, mainly on his final nine holes where he played them in 2-under par after her was 2-over par after his first seven holes. His final round score of 71 gave him a total score of 144 for the tournament and a tie for sixth place, his best career finish.
Senior Max Kollin, playing in his final tournament in Bloomington, finished in a tie for 16th place, his best finish of the season.
Keegan Vea posted a final round 78 to give him a total score of 157 and a tie for 52nd while Brendon Doyle finished in a tie for 56th.
The second team of five that represented Indiana registered a team score 320 on Sunday to give them a total score of 634 and 15th place. They were led by Jack Sparrow's overall score of 156 to put him 51st place.
Freshman Trevor Ranton tied for 59th with his score of 159 over the two day swhile Christian Fairbanks and Will Seger both tied for 64th and Matthew Weber came in 75th.
Indiana will host the Hoosier Collegiate at Otter Creek Golf Course next Saturday and Sunday in Columbus Indiana. The tournament will have teams play 36 holes on Saturday followed by 18 holes on Sunday.
