Brown, Havill Even After 18 Holes of Big Ten Championship

NEWBURGH, Indiana – In the first round of the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship at Victoria National, the Indiana men's golf team got off to a strong start and was near the top of the leader very early in their round.
But a couple mistakes cost the Hoosiers some strokes and position on the leaderboard as they would finish with a team score of 300 and 11th place after 18 holes.
Individually, redshirt freshman Jake Brown and junior Andrew Havill both registered rounds of Even par 72 and are tied for 15th. Keegan Vea, a native of Evansville, and senior Max Kollin both added rounds of 78 to round out the scores that counted on Friday.
Sophomore Brendon Doyle opened with an 81 and is tied for 65th.
Brown's round began on the 10th hole and it was a roller coaster almost from the start. After a par on his first hole, he followed that up with a bogey and a double bogey and was 3-over through three holes. But an eagle on his fourth hole followed by birdies on his five and seventh hole had him 1-under on the day. However, he ran into trouble on his eight hole – hole No. 17 – and would post an 8 on the par 4 to fall to 3-over. He was able to put that out of his mind quickly and record par on the next three holes before playing his final seven holes in 3-under par to get back to even for the round.
Havill's day was a little less colorful on the scorecard, as he carded three birdies and three bogeys to go with 12 pars. After a birdie on his first hole, bogeys on his fifth and eighth holes had him at 1-over par making the turn. A bogey on his 12th hole pushed him to 2-over par before he rallied at the end of the round with back-to-back birdies to draw even.
Indiana will start it's second round at 10:40 a.m. ET Saturday going off No. 10. Fans can follow all of the scores at GolfStat.com.
