PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Indiana Softball dropped game one of the weekend series against Rutgers on Friday afternoon, 8-3.
The Hoosiers (24-20, 6-9 Big Ten) led, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fourth before the Scarlet Knights (21-26, 5-10 Big Ten) scored six unanswered to close out the game.
Junior Erin Lehman singled with one out in the first inning and stole second to get in scoring position. Senior Kelsey Dotson then drew a walk to put a pair on, but both were left stranded.
Indiana went back to work in the second frame as senior Katelyn Conenna led off with a single on a liner to left. However, she was picked off on a close play at first. Sophomore Rachel O'Malley then reached on a Rutgers fielding error, but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Rutgers struck in the third inning after a lead-off single and double put two Scarlet Knights in scoring position. Jordan Whitley then doubled to left center to plate Nicolette Anico and Meaghan Wells.
The Hoosiers struck back quickly in the fourth as they plated a trio of runs to take a 3-2 lead. After Dotson drew her second walk of the day, senior Michelle Huber singled to center. Conenna then knocked her second hit of the game on a double to left center to plate Dotson. Next batter up, sophomore Taylor Uden picked up a double of her own on a shot to right center, scoring Huber and Conenna.
A double steal in the bottom of the frame tied up the game as Rutgers' Jaqueline Kott stole home on Indiana's attempt to catch another Scarlet Knight runner stealing second. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Whitley put Rutgers back on top on a two-run single to shallow right center. Next batter, Rebecca Hall hit a three-run shot to left field to extend the Scarlet Knight lead to 8-3.
Freshman Josie Wood stepped in to pick up the final out of the fourth and pitched solidly in relief. The lefty tossed 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.
The teams head back to the Rutgers Softball Complex on Saturday for a 1 p.m. first pitch. A live radio broadcast will be available of IUHoosiers.com
