PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite a late-inning rally, Indiana Softball dropped game two against Rutgers on Saturday, 6-3. The Hoosiers plated three runs in the sixth, but it was not enough to overcome a 6-0 deficit.
Three straight singles to lead off the first put Rutgers (22-26, 6-10 Big Ten) on the board as a chopper by Rebecca Hall plate Stephanie Huang. Following another single to load the bags, Elizabeth Adams singled to left to score Jordan Whitley. The third Scarlet Knight run came on a passed ball, brining in Hall.
The Hoosiers (24-21, 6-10 Big Ten) looked to respond in the second as sophomore Taylor Uden drew a leadoff walk and was moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Nicole Lawvere, who made her first career start on Saturday at third base. However, the next two batters went down swinging to end the threat.
A pair of Indiana errors proved costly in the following inning as Rutgers added two more. A leadoff walk and Indiana throwing error at first put two on before Huang reached on a fielding error at second base, allowing Nicolette Anico to score. Hall then collected her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Scarlet Knights made it 6-0 on an RBI single by Whitley through the right side to plate Anico.
Indiana got on the board in the sixth inning via a three-run homer by redshirt senior Shannon Cawley. After senior Katelyn Conenna drew her second walk of the game, senior Kelsey Dotson doubled to put two in scoring position. Cawley then sent one over the fence in left center to plate senior Alyssa Rosati and sophomore Sarah Thompson, in running for Conenna and Dotson. The homer was Cawley's second of the season with her other shot coming against Delaware on Feb. 20. Lawvere then picked up her first career hit on a single to shallow center field, but she was left stranded.
The Hoosiers attempted to continue the rally in the seventh as junior Erin Lehman led off the frame with a single. After a fielder's choice by sophomore Rebeccca Blitz, Conenna singled to put two on. However, the Hoosiers went down on strikes to end the game.
Indiana and Rutgers close out the series on Sunday at noon. A live radio broadcast is available on IUHoosiers.com
