PISCATAWAY, N.J. – For the second game in a row, a late rally by Indiana Softball fell short as the Hoosiers dropped the series finale to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.
Indiana (24-22, 6-11 Big Ten) collected a series-high nine hits, but stranded seven runners on the day.
Sophomore Rebecca Blitz led off the game with a bunt single, but was caught stealing. Junior Erin Lehman then knocked the second hit of the game on a single through the right side, but she was left stranded.
Junior CaraMia Tsirigos picked up the first run of the game as she belted a two-out solo homer to left center in the second. The home run is the fifth of the season for Tsirigos, which leads the team.
The Scarlet Knights (23-26, 7-10 Big Ten) looked to respond in the home half of the inning as they drew a leadoff walk before freshman pitcher Tara Trainer sent down the next three batters swinging.
Rutgers once against threatened in the third as the Scarlet Knights knocked a leadoff single, follow by a walk. However, they were left stranded as senior Shannon Cawley made a running catch on a fly ball to right and Trainer picked up her fifth strikeout. Trainer finished the day with 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and surrendering four walks.
After back-to-back innings that saw the Hoosiers go down in order, Cawley led off the fifth with a single to right, follow by a four-pitch walk to Tsirigos. A fielder's choice resulted in the frame's first out, but sophomore Rachel O'Malley loaded the bags as she singled up the middle. Indiana left the bases loaded though as a strikeout and groundout ended the frame.
A pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners for Rutgers with a pair of outs in the fifth, before a three-run shot by Dresden Maddox off lefty freshman pitcher Josie Wood gave the Scarlet Knights a 3-1 lead.
The Hoosiers started a two-out rally in the sixth as senior Kelsey Dotson sent a double to center, follow by an RBI double from Cawley to left to close the gap to 3-2. Tsirigos then reached for the third time on the day as she singled to short, but a popout stranded two.
O'Malley led off the final inning with a single to shallow left field before moving into scoring position on a groundout. However, the Hoosiers couldn't capitalize as another groundout and flyout ended the game.
Indiana returns to Andy Mohr Field next weekend in the final home series of the season. First pitch is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
