INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana baseball dropped its first of two midweek contests, 5-0, to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Tuesday. The loss is just the third in the last 14 games for the Hoosiers.
Junior and Indianapolis native Luke Stephenson got the start on the bump an scattered four hits for three runs in four innings of work. Freshman Paul Milto worked for three innings, while sophomore Austin Foote tossed a hitless inning of action.
Junior Craig Dedelow picked up three hits in the effort, finishing the night 3-for-4, while senior Brian Wilhite added two hits. Freshman Ryan Fineman also singled to round out the six hits the Hoosiers accumulated on the evening.
The Hoosiers tagged a pair of singles in the first but stranded the runners before a one-out single put the Irish ahead in the bottom of the inning. Wilhite tried to even the score at 1-1 in the visiting half of the second, doubling to one of the deepest parts of the ballpark, but he would be stranded at second base following a two-base hit.
Notre Dame extended its lead in the bottom of the third off a two-run home run to right field to take a 3-0 lead before Stephenson retired the side to halt the damage. After trading scoreless attempts in the fourth frame, Notre Dame upped its lead to 5-0 in the fifth off its second two-run home run of the night.
Junior Alex Krupa tried to spark the Hoosiers' offense in the top of the seventh with a lead-off walk and a stolen base. He would get as far as third after tagging up when Wilhite flew out to left field. Junior Austin Cangelosi led off in similar fashion during Indiana's final trip to the plate in the ninth. After drawing a lead-off walk, he took second off a wild pitch. Freshman Luke Miller's fielder's choice wiped Cangelosi off the base paths en route to the Irish retiring the side.
Indiana is back in action tomorrow as it hosts the Xavier Musketeers. First pitch from Bart Kaufman field is slated for 6:05 p.m.
Game Notes: With a second inning double, Brian Wilhite extended his hitting streak to five games, the second highest current mark on the team… Craig Dedelow notched his 13th multi-hit game of the season, a team-high… For the second time this season, Dedelow recorded three hits in a single game.
